It was a first in a long while that Invidia paced in agitation within his office. Ever since his induction as this district's Head, everything was smooth sailing. Operating under Isla's thumb provided him various advantages and privileges that most envied for. But, this also came with a responsibility to maintain the painstakingly pieced together Order that his Queen established upon her rise to power. Years after warming this seat, Invidia grew increasingly comfortable in his position. Now, there was a disturbance. His power fluttered and fluctuated. Something out there was messing with the City in ways that would never end well. It bothered him and warranted his full attention. But the phone called for his attention with its repetitive annoying noise. Who could it possibly be? He picked up the receiver, wondering who deemed it necessary to pull his own focus away from his dilemma towards them.
Her.
It was another of his kind ruling over their own domain. There was a growing loathing inside him when hearing her voice as his fingers gripped tighter on the receiver. Like a shark smelling the tiniest hint of blood in the water, she came to him. He could easily tell there was a ravenous look on her face behind the connection. You could never let your own weakness show. This certainly applied the same when dealing with the District Head of Backlight. "There have been unsavory rumors circulating lately. I am just concerned. How's things in Suzie Q? Has it been... taxing?"
"This district's current state lies nowhere in your jurisdiction. Stay in your lane, Avaritia," Invidia icily replied. He could feel his own indignation and rage begin to swell. This was his land, his kingdom. No one was going to take that away from him. And this sow had the gall to desire for it and to try to claim it for herself. But his tone remained cool and composed despite the receiver beginning to crack under pressure. Weakness cannot be shown. None of it was allowed, especially towards her of all people.
But she continued to jab at it with a precise needle. Behind the receiver, her smile was growing gradually wider towards a Cheshire-like, yet stiff, fashion. Even when he couldn't see her, Invidia could tell what her face looked like. "Is showing concern for my colleague such a sin? After all, we're all in the same boat no matter how much we detest or adore each other. Would you like my assistance, Invidia? You can find me your most willing companion in such times."
But he rebuffed her once more. "I don't need your help. If you've suddenly feel like being such a Good Samaritan, you can make better use of your time to harass Superbia about her work instead."
There was a slight pause. Perhaps she was deliberating to herself for a moment. During that time, the hooded District Head wondered why this passed under Superbia's gaze. Was she even doing her job? What kind of threat were they facing? The uncertainties were beginning to claw deeper, but for sure there were going to be Psyche-Terrorists messing around. A bunch of nobodies with powers requiring control tended to have their desires to mess with the current order. But how exactly did this happen?
"Very well, perhaps I should. Please remember, Invidia, I'm always there to help you if you need it..."
He could hear her chuckling before the connection died and the receiver snapped in two. Help. The District Head knew better. She was more likely to be waiting to nab the district the first chance she got. But he had more pressing matters to attend to than squabble over with a bitch like her. It was time to go to work and find these miscreants. Though he was sure if they dealt such a hand, they were going to come after him. Why go all that trouble to look for them when they would come and hand themselves to you on a silver platter? Let them come. After all, this makes tonight an interesting reservation just for them. He watched the meandering sheep below him through the window, as if anticipating that moment. As he continued to watch, a 'shadow' stared back behind him.
