Vitale’s mind blanked. It was his chance to leave the camp, his dream of freedom finally achieved… On the other hand, his mind wandered to the other slaves’ image. They wouldn’t manage to leave on their own. They wouldn’t even try, most of them were physically weak, debilitated with a life of malnourishment, torture and fear. Be it self-assuredness or not, Vitale took for himself the role to find a way to free these humans. Then again… if this man was able to sneak in and came to his rescue out of pure altruism, then that means…
“Go”, he could hear inside his convoluted mind. That was God providing him assistance and the very presence of this man can only be a sign of God, the one he has been praying to everyday, that Vitale was on the right path. The face of Zacharie came to mind. He promised alliance to him, to help achieving their freedom. This felt like a betrayal, a bittersweet stab on the back after an attempt of giving a more optimistic outlook to a hopeless soul. May God forgive him for this…
