Subject: Endymion Faction Guide & Setting Fundamentals Wed Jun 20, 2018 8:43 am
Endymion is eternally divided. Five years ago in the midst of a grand technological reveal presented to the general public, the first two known Persona Users clashed over their conflicting ideals, struggling against one another in a fatal yet unseen conflict that claimed the lives of countless people and shaped the future to come for both the world and the city itself. Though these two champions would slowly fall into obscurity in the years to come, their actions and powers would be remembered as the spark that ignited a global catastrophe, unleashing hordes of Demons and supernatural monsters upon the Earth and in the process causing the near collapse of civilization itself. While the vast majority of people believe that this disaster is the only thing they wrought, the truth is somewhat more... complex. Grown in the water of spilled blood, the two women left behind figurative seeds that'd shape the culture of their city to come, blooming flowers vying for dominance in the heart of their society.
Yomi planted a seed of Law, self-sacrifice, and preservation of the present... Rei planted a seed of Chaos, individualism, and shaping of the future...
One desired the status quo and the other sought a new world. Rei set Demons upon mankind in her attempt to merge their home with ours and Yomi, fearing the fallout of such an action, slew her with the aid of a man forgotten to time and contained the effects as best as she could. Neither fully succeeded in their mission and the result was that the populace of Endymion would come to unknowingly take up their mantle in the years to come. As a mysterious woman named Isla established a new government in the city and named herself queen, she'd enlist the aid of volunteers and assemble a force to hunt down any human or creature with supernatural powers all in the name of preventing a calamity like the Eternal Divide from ever happening again. These warriors she created became known as Cadets, whereas the Persona Users they hunted came to be known as Psyche Terrorists. Yet within the city, there are countless fighters who fall both inside and outside of those broad categories, and it's these individuals and the groups that they've formed that'll be discussed in this topic.
The Platinum Playhouse is an organization made up of numerous Persona Users who've recently united in the hopes of uncovering the truth behind the city's order and overthrowing the queen. Overseen by a goat-like Demon known as Larsinny, the faction's modus operandi is to gather dirt on the District Leaders who oversee each sector of the city and release it to the general public through careful manipulation of rumors, exposing corruption to the masses and then striking out at the District Leader responsible for it in an effort to forcibly remove them from office. Because of its broad goal of fighting back against the government it appeals to a wide variety of Psyche Terrorists and can incorporate nearly anyone in theory, but this very same inclusivity can potentially push some away due to it at present arguably being defined by its stance of opposition.
Having existed in the past as a prominent force during the early years of Queen Isla's reign, the current Playhouse could be said to be a shadow of its former self. Many of the rebels who comprised it in its glory days have since been rehabilitated and the most notable of the old guard have severed ties with it in the name of pursuing their own goals and idea of freedom. However, the Playhouse nevertheless has the potential to be a powerful symbol thanks to its past, and with eager new recruits it's on the rise to notoriety... and perhaps revolution. It's whatever those who join it'll make of it and in a way it can be considered the "default faction" for the terrorist cause, though this isn't necessarily the case anymore with the emergence of other joinable sides. Regardless, Larsinny and his allies are always willing to welcome in another set of capable hands, no matter who they may belong to.
Class Zero Soldiers of Order
Class Zero is considered the elite of the elite among the Cadets and the masses that they protect. While other kinds of Cadet exist such as the forces stationed within the city's Outer Rim, Class Zero is unique in many ways and to the general public is a symbol of the institution as a whole, a bright beacon of hope to most and an order of bloodhounds and thugs to those critical of the government. Made up of handpicked volunteers from a wide variety of backgrounds and ages, the Cadets of Class Zero deal with internal threats to Endymion's security, hunting down Psyche Terrorists and Demons within the city in the name of protecting the populace and guarding the queen's order. Based out of Seven Stars Academy, the group is commanded by Prince Julius Lamecia and organized via a meritocratic hierarchy that prioritizes mission success above all else, rewarding officers who climb the ranks with authority over their peers and even mundane law enforcement so long as it serves the purposes of an ongoing investigation. Said investigations are exclusively under the purview of these operatives who in the process often uncover the location of Domains: supernaturally altered areas in the city belonging to a Psyche Terrorist that are filled with everything from Demons, to allied Persona Users, to even ordinary hostages at risk of death at their captor's hands... or worse.
The motivations that drive the Cadets to join can be as varied as those of the Psyche Terrorists they struggle against. Those who swear their loyalty to Queen Isla are provided for for life by the government and their families receive the same treatment; this alone is incentive enough to encourage many to attempt to join their ranks, but countless more apply out of a sense of duty or a desire to protect others. Endymion was divided by its tragedy, but it was also paradoxically brought closer because of it. All within the city can understand the pain that the uninhibited supernatural brings, argue the ranks of Cadets, and thus all can understand the need for protection, unity, and strength in such dire times. But between the so-called "rehabilitation" of captured terrorists into loyal soldiers and the rigid with-us-or-against-us policy that they uphold and enforce, there's cause for concern among the less conformist citizens in society... not that they'd voice such criticisms within hearing range of their shepherds. Still, desperate times call for desperate measures, and the knights of Endymion are viewed largely as heroes by the public for their loyal service to the city, the people, and the fragile peace that they've cultivated through their efforts.
Helter Skelter Instigators of Calamity
Many in Endymion and around the world despise Demons. Throughout human history, people have painted such entities as malevolent cursed beings and blamed the woes of the times upon them, a practice which has only grown even more common now that they walk among us. Few sons and daughters of man would ever consider aligning themselves with the scourge that devastated their planet, but there are those who see worth in that which is decried as worthless, those who seek the company of Demons whether as a means of accomplishing their goals or an end unto itself. Among these rare souls is the infamous Psyche Terrorist known as Skelter and the followers who've come to support him. Like many other rebels within Endymion, they seek to topple the government and change the status quo, but it's their methods and goals that make them stand out amongst their contemporaries. Ultimately Skelter seeks to return the streets of Endymion to the way they were in the early years following the Eternal Divide... in other words, he seeks to flood them with Demons and shift the city back to its chaotic roots, fostering humanity's Potential and creating a new generation of Psyche Terrorists through cooperation and conflict with the beasts that mankind currently condemns.
Among those who support Skelter are his trusty lieutenants Queen Bee and Alice. The trio worked together during the Divide and throughout the early years of Isla's rule, coming together with Larsinny to create the first Platinum Playhouse, but despite their initial success they were eventually captured and rehabilitated by the government. After breaking through their conditioning years later they managed to reunite and met up with their old friend and the new members of the Playhouse, however, the promising reunion concluded tragically when Skelter's murderous new methods drove his old friend away and caused a splinter within the faction that ended in several Playhouse recruits defecting to his cause. Currently, both organizations appear to be focused on overthrowing the state, but it remains to be seen what'll become of their conflict if and when they succeed in eliminating that common foe. One thing's for sure though: no matter what happens, the city'll be changed forever.
Infinite Jest
A green-tinted gaggle of cackling clowns, Infinite Jest are by far the most eccentric and dangerous of the terrorist cabals stalking the streets. Their beginnings seem relatively recent on the surface, marked by an online announcement of their existence broadcasted to the general public and newborn rumors of a "haunted" cellphone application that turns those who use it against the government, but the aura that surrounds them hearkens back to a time far further and their consecutive actions against the Cadets seem to imply a heavily controlled sort of chaos too well-orchestrated to be conducted on an abrupt whim. However it isn't only their origins that remain shrouded in mystery; the group as an entirety wraps itself in secrecy in spite of its bombastic displays and its open promises of truth are only offered to those willing to seek them out. Whatever tricks they hold up their sleeves remain mostly undiscovered for the moment, but if nothing else they've displayed in their encounters with Class Zero the ability to incite demonic possession in some and a capacity for twisting people's minds to match their own insanity, both concerning prospects when no one can be sure of who their next target'll be.
Infinite Jest is a very unique faction and they're by far the closest thing that this morally grey plot has to a definite antagonist group. While all are free to join if they so wish, it's heavily recommended that new members avoid the faction (at least when they're first starting out) and instead opt for one of the other organizations listed in this topic. Those who do decide to join will be required to keep their affiliation with the group a secret both in and out of character; you'll need to privately contact Grantus or Godai either on the site or the official Discord about your desire to join the faction and from there you'll receive the necessary instructions and information about it. Remember: keep this all a secret. You'll only be shooting yourself in the foot and ruining people's fun if you run around advertising how you're part of Infinite Jest, so don't do it. After all, wouldn't it be much more fun to lead them along? To sow, and harvest, and then relish in their shock when the time finally comes to remove the mask? The jesters would certainly think so. Do you?
Unaligned
And yet there is another road beyond all these, beyond the ideals and causes espoused here. Even in the darkest of hours there is always another decision, another choice to take you down a different path, but that path isn't always a comfortable road. Those who reject the factions fostered by Yomi and Rei may always attempt to carve out a legacy of their own within the city, shunning both Law and Chaos, perhaps even casting off the very concept of dogma itself. More often than not these people simply don't have a stake in the politics of the city; they deny both conformity and rebellion because they have affairs of their own to attend to, or see each side as equally problematic, or fear the personal risks involved with putting themselves in the line of danger, etc. There are overall many reasons why a person would choose to be neutral in the conflict and it's this variety that makes this "faction" perhaps the most individualistic of all the options within Endymion. Still, it's far from some mythical perfect choice. The government sees all unregistered wielders of supernatural powers as Psyche Terrorists and the Cadets will hunt down each and everyone of them regardless of whether or not they're actively rebelling. Meanwhile, many Psyche Terrorist factions will naturally see the unaligned as selfish and unwilling to take a stand, temporary allies at the best of times and self-destructive nuisances at the worst.
Like Infinite Jest, this is another group that isn't recommended for first-time players, albeit for different reasons that are unique to it alone. "Neutrals" as they're often called (a bit of a confusing term as there's a faction in Endymion yet to be unlocked that's neutral in alignment) don't have as strong of a role in the plot as the other available choices simply due to their nature alone. While it's certainly possible for a neutral character to influence the story on their own or even to hypothetically form their own faction if enough players are willing to join them, the fact is that they'll have to put in a lot of extra work to do so, an unavoidable consequence of refusing the aid of other more established groups which are able to provide their members with missions and additional support. It's only recommended that you go unaligned if you aren't particularly concerned with having a big impact on things, don't care about missing out on plot missions, and/or have your own story or goals in mind that you're willing to put a lot of time and effort into seeing realized. Some may also opt to make unaligned characters in the hopes of joining factions only available in the future, however, this isn't necessarily advised either as in many cases you can still switch from your current group to a new one so long as it makes sense in-character. Regardless, the choice is up to you and you alone, and those who refuse to lend their loyalty to any one cause can count on that remaining the case for them.
But while theses forces fight, others wait and watch, yet to be discovered. More to come...
