Thinking on the advice that Kevin had provided him, Tomomi went to the academy library, intent on getting improvements on his studying. He’d borrowed a book on basic grammatical formation, so, as he found a small little table to sit at, he took his place, got the book out of his bag, and with his jacket slung over his shoulder as always, began to read. Specifically in this instance, he was looking at when it was important to use the word which, and when to use the word that. The key to understanding proper usage of these words is learning the difference between restrictive and non-restrictive clauses.
The word clauses came up again. Goodness he had to remember so much. Why do languages have to be so much different from one another? Furthermore, the type of English also influences when a word is or is not used. In either instance, though, the word is used…He could feel himself falling asleep. Still, he jolted himself back awake, and continued to read. In either instance, though, the word used is dependent upon the type of clause. If there is a non-restrictive clause, it is preceded by a comma, representing extra information. Conversely, there’s a restrictive clause if it is not preceded by a comma. The following are instances that are such examples. - They got into the van, which had white stripes [non-restrictive] - They got into the van that had white stripes [restrictive]
As he finished the page, Tomomi blinked, before re-reading it to try and take it in properly. That, outside of the complicated wording… Made sense, in a way? So, which was for when it was non-essential, and, that was essential? If he understood anyways. At that, he packed the book back up, putting a bookmark where he was, before preparing to get to his next classes, intent on studying in the afternoon once more. | |
