| _______________________ Business Complaints_______________________ It was a mess. A total complete mess. Nothing seemed to go well for the hooded District Head. Ever since he began to feel the drain on his power, he knew something was wrong. None of this should've happened. Everything was supposed to be in Order. Now suddenly that sense of safety was cut off. Pain wrecked his entire body and it hurt to move. The worst of it subsided, but it still meant these Psyche-Terrorists were still at large. Next time, they wouldn't be so lucky. His cracked phone drilled through the motions as he waited. It took what he had from outright breaking the device. Seams of indignation kept him together, but it threatened to leak out. Invidia never had any reason to adore her or to hate her. Their relationship was ultimately symbiotic, each halves needed each other. Invidia provided the labor for the City's entertainment while the other set up the technological groundwork to make that widespread. Someone picked up and answered with a greeting. "You don't usually call me, Invidia.""It's been a while, Superbia. I'll cut to the chase. You messed up. Why?""Me? Oh, the latest attack on your district? How deplorable. You have my dearest con--" "Answer my question, bitch," Invidia crudely cut her off. The deadly calm in his tone was razor sharp and the message was clear. He was not calling for mere pleasantries. This was business. If there was another person he didn't trust either, it was her. He needed her as much as she needed him. All the District Heads did, but their relationship required more closure. "It was your job to keep any complications from affecting our power. You normally don't fail. What are you planning?""You suspect me? I'm hurt. And disappointed. You let complacency get the best of you and you seek me, out of all people, to be your scapegoat? I wonder how the Royal Guard... No, the Queen would react to this," the woman scoffed back. The thin veneer of amiability slid off and in its place was disdain. Her side of the relationship with him was purely business. But, at times they butt heads. If it weren't for the looming Damocle's Sword from the Guard, there might've been bloodshed between the two already and with one feasting on the other's resources as a hard-won prize. "Then I wonder how they would react when you've not only been neglecting your duties, but you've also encroached upon my territory." It felt almost as if a pin dropped all of a sudden in an empty quiet room. Or at least that's what Invidia hoped for. But he could begin to hear the giggling through the receiver. After having worked with her for so long, willingly and unwillingly, something was wrong. At the same time, he realized it wasn't her. "Encroached? More intruders, Invidia? You've really fallen this time. Oh I can see the Guard giving you that cold glare of hers stripping you down to your bones before filleting you with her blade. My, I can smell the desperation."The other side was silent this time. She could almost sense the doubt, but also the indignation and fuming. The woman continued, almost with a snide voice, "Take this advice from me, as a fellow individual who enjoys themselves. If you're going to go diving into debauchery, the least you could do is not forget why you have that power in the first place."More silence. Then there was the dial tone. Superbia huffed. What a waste of her time. But there was something interesting she learned. Someone was targeting Invidia. And perhaps not just him. It could easily spread to the rest. This information was useful and something to harbor to herself. The other District Heads she cared less about. But there was one... "Hello Avaritia. Do you have a moment?" | |
