Curiosity Killed The Cat [Esra/Pendleton Awakening]

"What the hell are you doing?" Esra shouted over her shoulder at Pendleton. She hadn't seen him with any medication before and this was certainly not the time to start taking it in the middle of a fight. It was certainly the trippiest and weirdest fight she'd ever heard of, but she could still feel the tension, life was on the line.

He gave Esra a lazy gaze. "Always acting like you're better than everyone else...in most cultures that's considered a negative personality trait." Pen commented, before going back to the fight.

"Ah, how worrisome. One of you have fallen. Do not fret, my dears. He'll be back up once more. said a voice in the darkness above. Something fell from the sky, or at least it looked like it. Once it landed on Pendleton, he was back to full health and ready to fight once more. "Do put up a good fight, won't you?"

Pendleton picked himself up off the ground, with a pant. That had HURT, goddamn it! As he stood, a large sword appeared in his hands. "...I will have my revenge." He muttered. He gripped it tightly with both hands.

Esra should be dead, they all should be.

The great red beast had swung at them with its oversized blade and it should have crushed every bone in their collective bodies. Instead she and Pendleton were sent flying like ragdolls down the alley in a blow that knocked her cartwheeling into a pile head first. The fact that she was not dead, that she was not even dying was just wrong. It hurt, her head rang like a bell and her skin was scratched but she felt like she had fallen off a bike rather than a car crash. Was this part of what she could do now?

It was almost enough to make her laugh as she staggered to her feet. She might have done if it hadn’t caught in her throat. Unlike her, Pendleton’s form wasn’t moving, she wasn’t even sure he was breathing. Without a second she was on her feet, rolling him over. Was he not the same? Was this something that she could survive but he couldn’t? This was her fault, just like the voice said. She should have taken his pulse, or checked his breathing but right now she was far from rational. This was exactly what she didn’t want to happen.

A familiar knife appeared in her hand one she had hid from herself for a long time. It was clean, it shouldn’t be. Anger took the girl over and at a headlong sprint she flung herself towards the creature with frozen look in her red eyes. With both hands she flung the blade into its chest before rebounding, seemingly harmlessly. The knife flicked into her right hand by reflex as with a backstep she dropped into a fighting stance, oddly like she knew what she was doing.

"...Is something wrong, Esra?" Hands still clutched tightly on the hilt of his sword, he summoned Boogeyman once more.

Esra flowed into memories she had put behind her. When she had to be tough in a different way, she needed to be able to use a knife at a moments notice. Rolling on her heels, keeping her centre of mass forwards and her eyes on that of the monstrous beast in front. Watching for his action, his eyes and his tell. It wasn't like a dance, nothing graceful directly. Ready to jump at a twitch and snap back in a second. She didn't consider the questions such a stance would raise, how she knew to move like this. As far as she knew she'd just gotten someone else killed for no reason.

She struck again, barely even making an impression against the red flesh but she tried none the less, trying to cut the back of the titan's knee out from under it. Bounding back several paces, skirts flaring she would have started to move forward again if not for a voice.

Pulled back, twisting her head over her shoulder at an angle Esra was shocked to see Pendleton. Upright, perfectly fine, what? He was dead, how could? It didn't make any sense, it seemed like that shock her more than his dead had. No relief, no thanks, just, anger. She wanted to punch him in the face for, whatever this was.

Rasping her voice escaped, "You are messed up," The anger was twinged with something she was pretty clueless about.
