So what the hell is this, then?

Here at the Lab, you can combine materials into ones of a higher tier (Distillation), or break down a material into several of the tier below (Dissociation). This only works for materials of the same type - you can't use Fire materials to make an Ice material, and you break down Light materials into a bunch of Luck materials. This is alchemy - there are rules to this stuff.
And as with everything, this isn't free. Using these services has a cost in VC - and, of course, you have to have the actual materials for whatever you're doing.
So let's get into this, shall we?

Distillation

"Ugh...yes, this does let you make Silver."

By providing 5 materials of the same type, you have them combined to make the corresponding material in the next tier - for example, 5 Light Fragments can be made into a Light Shard, but you couldn't make a Rabbit Paw out of Light Fragments.

When you Distill materials, you pay a cost corresponding to the tier of the material you're making, as follows:

Tier 2: 5000 VC
Tier 3: 10000 VC
Tier 4: 20000 VC

Nothing comes for free, after all.

Dissociation

"Somehow I get the impression Paige is going to have fun later."

Dissociation lets you make a material into 5 of the next tier down. As with Distillation, the materials you get are the same type as the one you provided - an Efficient Lightbulb is separated into 5 Dim Lightbulbs, but it won't break down into any Cotton. You'd have to break down Wool to get that.

Unlike Distillation, you don't pay for the tier of material you're getting - you pay based on the tier of the material being broken down, as follows:

Tier 2: 3500 VC
Tier 3: 7000 VC
Tier 4: 14000 VC

As a special note: A Full Facade breaks down into 10 Broken Facades, since dissociating the material sends it down two tiers.
This is something that only happens with that material.
