There was a kind of lull in the Seven Stars Academy's Gym as many of its students tended to be busy at class or with some particular activity at this time. But in no way is it empty as someone was swinging a katana blade in the midst of its spacious interior. Lisa was practicing drills with her sword just the way her brother taught her. Swings to the head and to the sides of varying angles were done with straight diligence. She could feel her muscles beginning to feel raw from the repetition, but that was when she was starting to get stronger for sure. Despite that... there was still something off that she couldn't quite get off her mind as she committed herself to practice.

Even if many students had classes at the moment, there were some who chose to take this time to pursue some exercise as opposed to augmenting their already stellar academics. Naturally, Shiina was one of those students, someone who walked into the gym packing a sports bag and fitting clothes for exercising; something light, something that wouldn't get in the way while practicing her CQC. Something that, in the end, didn't really fit the Tsurinai at first glance.

//"Yosh..."// The Wild Card didn't notice Lisa as she walked in at first, but it didn't take long for the swings to catch her attention. Though, from their previous meeting, it seemed more like Lisa didn't really like being disturbed while training, so it was best to take up another spot. //"Guess it's just the two of us here."// She hummed lightly and went to one of the gym walls to begin setting up her things. At least the gym had a bunch of these for the students to use...

She continued to devote herself to the slashes. They may hit empty air, but she was able to simulate the sensation of ripping flesh. There were several kenjutsu styles that wore protection during their kata in order to simulate the blow in order to fully complete the sequence for practice. The Cadet swordswoman was more focused on strength and speed rather than precision and finesse for today, focusing on the two characteristics to grow the endurance of her muscles.

Lisa never seemed to notice the newcomer at first with her straightforward training. But after spinning around to complete a form, it was only then she finally perceived Shiina's presence. It wasn't the first time she saw the Tsurinai come here for training and thankfully this time they didn't bring that cumbersome equipment. She found herself returning back to her swings and footwork. Practice came first, not gawking.

The path of perfection was a long one, after all.

Shiina removed a pair of fingerless protective gloves from her bag then left it open on the ground. Inside was just a small thermal case filled with water and energy drinks. Silently she slipped on the gloves and fastened them tightly over her hands; before she could actually get to the main point she needed to do a few warm-up exercises.

First were the stretches, just to loosen her muscles. After a few minutes, the Tsurinai was done fairly effortlessly, displaying physical ability at least on par with her family's standards. She was a somewhat flexible person mostly due to that. Next were more standard exercises, starting with sit-ups.

At the very least, the Wild Card knew how to pace herself. Her goal today was a total of 45 sit-ups in 60 seconds. Although Shiina knew her fitness was above average she was still lacking when it came to a proper Tsurinai, as her record was right now only close to 40. Her cousins often exceeded 50 and even Setai, despite his advanced age, still managed to score an impressive 40, far above excellent for his age group.

This was the nature of such a militarized training, a regimen she had been conditioned to undergo from early childhood and never once neglected for a single day. Though she didn't have the body to reach the heights someone with Tsurinai blood would be capable of, Shiina could still reach higher, she knew she could. Hence why she was now pushing herself to complete as many sit-ups as she could in a minute. Next were push-ups, those would be far easier...

"...Hnrgh."

If there was one thing that Lisa must admit, it was that her peer was physically fit. But certainly not as fit as Maria was, to her observations after seeing the nun doing very demanding exercises and hauling around that coffin without problems, but certainly more physically able than your average gym monkey. In fact, it pushed Lisa to abandon the swings for now to start adopting more strenuous practices.

Her feet began to jump-glide back and forth together in tandem with her swings. 速素振り or "haya suburi" was a standard kendo drill that relied on your speed, but also your endurance. It was a common drill that caused the many kendoka to have blisters on their feet for the amount of bad footwork. But Lisa didn't care enough for that as she continued the repetitions. Her last record was around 180 strikes without stopping. Now let's see if she could reach an even 200.

41. That was a slight improvement but it could be attributed to circumstance only, of course she wasn't going to exceed her record by a large margin so easily. After taking a few seconds to catch her breath and hydrate, Shiina then stood up and reached up towards a metal bar...

Pull ups were considerably tougher to do successively than sit ups were and despite her best efforts the Wild Card rarely managed to pull off more than 6, and even then 7 was her utmost limit. This didn't consist of doing successive pull ups, however, it was however many in one minute. And that way she could pace herself. By doing 5 pull ups successively at a time in a few sets she could train more effectively than exhausting herself to her limit between each of them. Just a few sets with at most ten seconds of rest in between was enough, though they left her arms damn sore in the end.

When that exercise was finished, Shiina sat down by her bag and retrieved a towel to wipe her sweat. Witnessing Lisa's own training made her think on how both of them were likely to want to surpass their own role models. Being adopted into the Royal Family, Shiina could imagine she'd have a lot to compete with. Well, at least from Julius.

Hence why the Tsurinai, aware of the ceiling she aimed to break one day, grit her teeth.

//"Dammit... Naito would be able to finish 25 at a time I'm sure."// After another swig from her bottle, the Wild Card tossed the towel back into the bag and got down onto the ground to start a set of push ups. For this one, her absolute max was at around 30 consecutively, though she averaged out at around 25 most of the time. //"Haah... 15... 16..."// Silently counting out the numbers was a good way to pace her exhaling to a proper rhythm.

Her arms were far more soar and she could feel blisters beginning to form in her palms. It was a familiar sensation, but eventually she finally stopped after an impressive number of repetitions. But Lisa didn't feel quite satisfied with just 195, despite the sweat becoming sticky on her shirt and the weight of her blade likened to lead. The Cadet gave one last strike before finally swinging to the side to sheathe it. That was her limit for now, but thinking back, she was still pretty exhausted from last night's challenge. Even then, that was still no excuse to stop training, especially after seeing Shiina trying so hard.

Lisa didn't know a thing about the Tsurinai's or much outside of her family. She wasn't a savvy information-gatherer like Avaritia was. Nor did she have the brains or finesse of her siblings. But all she had was dedication and sometimes that's really all you need to get through life.

Lisa began to unsheathe her blade once more despite the exhaustion. She began slow and more precise movements. There was nothing truly repetitive, but it looked like she was beginning a sequence of movements, kata. The Princess remembered Julius' suggestion of trying these forms after putting herself to exhaustion. She was at first confused about it. But there's no reason not to take him seriously. After all, she wasn't really picky on what made her a better Cadet.

27. That was her max for today and though it wasn't exactly bad for someone of her age and build it still didn't hold a candle to what the rest of her family could do. It was time to take a proper break now, so Shiina just sat down beside her bag again and observed what Lisa was doing. She could at least recognize part of the kata used for kendo, many of her cousins chose to undergo that specific martial arts as their specialized training and she could see why. Though she was never really suited for kendo, Shiina still practiced something similar thanks to Naito's suggestion; iaido's katas were done solo as opposed to with a teacher, however.

//"I thought you needed a partner to practice Kendo Kata."// The Wild Card pulled her bottle to her lips, but didn't drink it immediately. //"At least that's how my cousins all practiced it. It seemed like a requirement from what I could gather, I only really saw iaido practitioners training their kata alone."// Now she actually drank a bit of water... however lukewarm it was getting.

Swordplay [Lisa/Shiina SL Rank 2] REtl2Mu

//"Did you manage to win last night? I'll be disappointed if you didn't."//

The Tsurinai set the bottle beside her and pulled on the edge of her gloves to readjust them. Her arms were still sore from the push ups but that didn't really matter for her next exercise.

//"I hope you won't mind if I toss you the same challenge in the future. We all have to find ways to get stronger, after all."// After saying that, Shiina began running down the track, not in a sprint or moderate pace, but one she was used to adopting for long marathons. Her goal right now was two miles at this constant pace, though in the past she had always capped off at 1.5 miles before having to slow down.

She frowned at the Tsurinai for bothering her in the midst of her movements. The Princess deigned to not answer, at least until she finished which didn't take as long since she was on the seventh and final form for the katana portion. Once her blade was sheathed, Lisa admitted, "It works better with both for the sake of timing and distance, but not impossible to do alone."

The Princess couldn't find herself appreciating Shiina's presence very much. Training alone was what she desired, but she was willing to make compromises when it best suited her progress. Like Maria, at least she was remarkably strong among the Cadets of her generation. But she had to acknowledge that Shiina was also physically capable unlike most. Despite her displeasure, a prideful smirk flitted across her features.

Swordplay [Lisa/Shiina SL Rank 2] Wtc4a6m

"Naturally. I faced off against our higher ups all at once, excluding my Brother."

She had pride radiating off from her. The spoils goes to the victor and thus they shall boast of their glory. It was a victory she sorely desired after the failure of the last mission. The look on Alex's face was priceless. But something troubled her about it. There was something about Maria that she couldn't quite put her finger on, but who cares? She won and they lost, that's all that mattered. Unknown to her, it was starting to get to her head. "Don't waste your time. I'll win regardless of your efforts. But I suppose I can grant you that privilege if you want it so badly. I'm ready anytime."

She watched the Tsurinai continue her training. On the meanwhile, Lisa unsheathed her blade and took this time to inspect it before choosing to continue her exercises.

PostSubject: Re: Swordplay [Lisa/Shiina SL Rank 2]   Swordplay [Lisa/Shiina SL Rank 2] EmptyMon Jun 24, 2019 2:50 pm

Shiina's eyes narrowed at that last comment, and she took an abrupt stop from her running. She wasn't someone to get angry at taunts, not at all, and all things considered she was a fairly novice swordswoman yet, but she had been taught by the best teacher she could think of and had her own pride to defend as well. She took the time to catch her breath before speaking, though.

//"I guess I can't blame you for being prideful after last night. I think you'll find the Tsurinai Family is a cut above the rest, though."// Her stamina regained, Shiina walked over to the practice swords and grabbed a slightly longer and thinner one than what was used for kendo practice. If the other Cadets had heard her comment they'd likely have scolded her for her conceitedness; but Shiina had some confidence despite her blunder, and so when she met Lisa's quiet eyes she kept the same casual smile she had.

"...if you're that eager for a beatdown. Just don't waste my time." The Princess scowled and readied her sword in front of her, taking the proper stance of a trained kendo practitioner. However, she paused, as she noticed Shiina kept her own sword sheathed at her waist. "What are you waiting for? Are you scared, or something?"

//"Not at all. Come at me with your best move, I promise I won't disappoint."// The Wild Card didn't budge, keeping her free hand holding the practice sword's sheath while her main hand hovered over its pommel. Lisa and her locked eyes for a few seconds, before the former huffed and nodded.

Swordplay [Lisa/Shiina SL Rank 2] Z3je0SP

"Fine, but I won't carry you to the nurse afterwards!"

The Princess took a running start and easily closed the distance between the two as she raised her sword up to take a quick swing downwards at Shiina's unprotected head. Had she her way, this round would be over in a flash; the Wild Card's stance left the upper part of her body vulnerable as both her arms were positioned at her waist or below. Of course, what Lisa met instead was the broad end of a blade blocking hers in a flash, Shiina herself crouched such that her head was at waist level, knees bent almost expertly to keep her balance perfectly solid as she twisted her body to face right. With a minor but forceful tap, Shiina parried Lisa's sword away and quickly swung downwards to smack the Princess' head with perfect accuracy.

"Kah--!" Lisa couldn't help but yelp as the sudden strike had her reeling back, and she witnessed as Shiina calmly rolled the tip of her sword along its sheath until it slid smoothly inside it with one motion. She was stunned. How couldn't she be? The Wild Card looked absolutely defenseless, but she managed to get a hit on her in one unfair move. She was upset. No, that was too light; she was fuming. She grit her teeth and shook her head, quickly climbing to her feet in frustration. "Best of three! You won't catch me off guard again!" With a renewed will, Lisa held her sword in both hands and resumed her stance, while Shiina's smile widened softly into a satisfied grin.

//"That's better. Round 2, then, Accel!"//

Shiina's eyes flashed a bright red as she dashed from her starting position; her speed was inhuman, quite clearly so, but Lisa's eyes remained trained on her every move. Instead of waiting in a defensive position, this time the Wild Card's sword met the Princess' directly as she swung towards her waist, but the wooden blades creaked as they slid off each other, Lisa's reflexes being fast enough that she could swing to block the incoming strike. And with a parry, comes a riposte--, a quick thrust as Lisa placed her palm at the end of her sword's pommel and struck it forward on a trajectory to strike Shiina's chest square in the middle. A blur, as the Tsurinai weaved her body under the incoming strike and used the chance to swing at Lisa's feet. Like her previous strike before, it didn't land, as the Princess simply jumped over the practice sword and took the chance to place some distance between them.

"Soul Skills? Isn't that cheating, Tsurinai?!" Lisa barked and dug her feet into the gym floor. She looked to her sides and saw a couple of other students who had previously been training now started to gather a fair distance away, witnessing the fight between the two Cadets. She didn't get to look for long, though, as a sudden shift in the wind alerted her to duck and roll away from an incoming downward swing at her head.

//"So? Don't tell me this is an issue for you. Also, focus."// Shiina grinned and took two steps back, sheathing her weapon and eyeing Lisa intently. The Princess got up off the ground, huffed and snarled.

"Yeah yeah. These extras don't bother me, let's go!" Lisa held her sword low, gripping it with both hands as she pointed it towards the ground. Taking the cue, Shiina advanced, dashing to the Princess' right side before swinging her blade to hit her right arm-- that was, before stopping abruptly with a feint and going for a wide swing at her legs. Lisa remained still as she saw the hit coming, and quickly drew her sword up to intercept Shiina's arc, at which point she swung it forcefully against the Wild Card's legs, knocking her onto the ground with a thud. Lisa smirked lightly as the small crowd gathering around them let out a few 'oohs' and 'aahs' at her display, though a couple did wince and riled for Shiina to get back up.

//"I knew you could keep up with it. The ability to change my perception of time and act faster accordingly, that's my soul's power."// Lisa didn't seem to care much, but she did raise an eyebrow as Shiina got up onto her feet with a spring in her step. Despite having lost the second round, the Wild Card didn't seem too angry or displeased. //"Your Kendo stances are the same, right?"// Though that, did indeed shock her.

"...hassou." Lisa raised her blade, holding it up to her right side as she stared Shiina down wordlessly. That gaze told her enough; she was right, and they were both making use of their souls' intrinsic abilities. Lisa's ceaseless training for perfection and Shiina's desire to alter time itself to her whims.

//"...Accel!"// Another burst of red, this time as Shiina took her blade and dug her feet into the ground, solidifying her defensive stance against the offensive kamae. Lisa took the cue, jumping forward and planting her foot on the ground before swinging down hard to meet the broad of Shiina's blade. The Princess twisted her sword, breaking contact in order to swing it at the incoming swipe from the left, a blur to the untrained eye of the other gymgoers, but as the successful parry finished she found her own immediate thrust being led astray by an upwards swipe, leaving her torso exposed. Lisa twisted her body right, narrowly evading a forceful, graceless thrust at her stomach, and so the two remained for several seconds. The crowd around them began to grow little by little, watching as the two of them darted around the little makeshift arena they had made for themselves. Shiina moved as an impressive blur despite the plain daytime outside, and even so Lisa's eyes kept up with her speed, and most importantly, her strikes matched the Wild Card's speed through sheer skill.

The Princess had trained her whole life to become perfect. She wasn't at the pinnacle of swordsmanship, but she was damn well proud of it, and the skill she was displaying left the students in awe. Similarly, the Wild Card's own soul allowed her to keep up with such an expert swordsman, and kept her on her toes as the clacks of wood against wood echoed through the gym.

The two had stopped their exchange at this point, letting their minds focus on the fight to the point that Lisa didn't notice the grin forming on her lips. As she ducked and rolled under an incoming swing, as she narrowly missed the thrust at Shiina's neck, as the Wild Card seemingly flew above her but she managed to track her down, and as Lisa turned around to thrust her blade right at Shiina's chest, she found the Wild Card's practice sword heading for her neck.

The two stopped centimeters away from hitting their targets. Shiina's sword was held up to Lisa's neck, and Lisa's sword was right above Shiina's heart. They were identically close to winning, their swords the exact same distance from each other's bodies as they stopped, heaving and sweating after the fight. Most importantly, both grinned as the adrenaline ran its course.

"...tied." Lisa, somewhat reluctantly, sputtered out before withdrawing her blade.

//"Indeed..."// Shiina heaved a heavy sigh as she did the same.

The Lamecia Princess furrowed her brow at the Tsurinai as she gnashed her teeth together into a grimace. A mixture of aggravation was apparent. She was so certain of herself that after beating a combination of First Class Cadets, the feat would easily put her way above a single Cadet of similar ranking to hers. And yet, Shiina managed to match her edge to edge and blow for blow, as if defiantly making a statement that the Princess still had a long way to go. But just as there was aggravation, so was the respect mixed into her expression. Then the explosion of cheering filled her ears as the spectators were indeed entertained, thus causing her to sigh deeply in barely hidden exasperation after sheathing her blade from ritualistic chiburi.

Even if she did say the crowd didn't bother her, if they went even further in the spar...

And with that, Lisa would give a nod towards Shiina before departing. The crowd would slowly part from seeing the fierce demeanor on her person until she left through the gym's exit...
