Appearance: Derrick stands at a height of about 4’10” and weighs 105 lbs. (47.63 Kg), giving him a very boyish frame; he has yet to his puberty, so much of his figure is very underdeveloped at the moment. His hair, once a dirty blonde, has been dyed varying shades of purple ever since he was about ten, as he wished to see as much of his favorite color before he went completely blind as he could. Despite being blind, his eyes appear like any other person’s; they are somewhat large and hazel in color, although normally hidden by a pair of shades Derrick wears while outdoors. Aside from a small mole on the left side of his face (about an inch above his lip), Derrick has no other visible marks or scars on his body.
As for his style, Derrick prefers to dress in a very reserved, almost adult fashion, preferring slacks, sweaters, and Vans or the occasional pair of boots. He very rarely wears accessories, and only then it’s just a scarf if he’s feeling particularly chilly. In the winter, he dons a large trench coat and is rarely seen without it.

If sided with users/terrorists, Derrick will wear all-black clothing consisting of boots, jeans, sweater and a jacket with cream fur trim around the collar. The mask he wears is a masquerade-style mask, solid red in color and curled on one end. It possesses no other decoration.

Personality: Derrick’s first impression on others is normally: “What a responsible boy.” And there is little reason to wonder why; he is very dedicated to whatever job or assignment he’s given, manages his time almost frighteningly well, is wise with his money, can take care of himself, and pursues his passions outside of school. The following impressions, at least to his peers, hardly go over as well.
Usually, although fairly polite, Derrick is very blunt and unsociable. He prefers to keep to himself, working with others only if he must and only talking to someone he’s known for a while, displays an acceptable degree of responsibility, or shares a similar way of interpreting his artistic passions. Even the activities he pursues reflect this, as he mostly sticks to one-man hobbies such as cooking, photography, painting, coding, and electronic tinkering.
Underneath that seemingly put-together persona he has, Derrick is still a child. His temper flares almost immediately if someone is acting what he deems “irresponsible”, or if they somehow meddle in his affairs or plans. He still has not fully come to understand that he needs others to function and his world cannot revolve around himself, so he can come off very self-centered and bratty when riled. And, although he tries to be an adult, he can and will throw tantrums if things are not going his way.
Despite all of these flaws, Derrick does have some redeeming features. He is very artistically gifted, especially when it comes to colors. He admires people who make a genuine effort, and will normally give them help and advice. While not being very versed in people’s emotional needs, he still grasps the concept of the need to vent, and can be a very good sounding board if need be. And for those who he’s grown to care for in some form or fashion, it’s quite possible that they could help him understand how to look after more than just himself.

—Description: Derrick’s vision began deteriorating at age 9, and since then he’s gotten used to navigating buildings, stores, and the like using his cane, sense of touch, listening, and what vision he does have. This has given him a very keen sense of awareness of others and his surroundings.

—Description: He’s not sure how it started or why, but Derrick has always been interested in the way machines work. Everything from handheld game systems to toaster ovens, he’ll study it and learn it inside out if given the chance.

—Description: After the death of his parents, Derrick had been shifted back and forth between foster homes and the orphanage until finally officially adopted by Vivian Oates. Thanks to the orphanage giving out a variety of chores to all the children and the desire to be proactive in his foster environments, Derrick has learned a lot about cooking, cleaning, sewing, washing, and other household tasks and can do many of them extremely well.

—Description: Upon learning of his condition, Derrick began to appreciate both art and visual media. Since then, he’s taken to learning different types of design, becoming very proficient in not only the knowledge of the arts, but different ways to apply them as well. Lately, he has been heavily into photography, but enjoys some painting and still-life drawing as well.

—Strength Name: Honesty is the Best Policy
—Description: While lying certainly has its uses (which Derrick has utilized more than once), he still prefers to be honest with people if he can. Despite his general attitude, most people realize this relatively fast, making Derrick a rough but trustworthy person to others.

—Weakness Name: Retinitis Pigmentosa
—Description: This is a condition where a person’s field of vision narrows until, upon reaching adulthood, they are completely blind. In other words, Derrick can only really see and focus on very specific areas such as a person from the chest up or the monitor of a computer with utmost clarity. Tunnel vision, more or less. He has lost the use of peripheral vision entirely, able to only see about 30 degrees worth of the visual field and is also night blind, meaning he can only see extremely bright lights (such as a halogen light or the headlights of a car) at night.

—Description: Derrick is extremely self-conscious about his condition and despises people who coddle him for it.

—Description: He hates help, he hates being looked down upon, and normally takes on far too much just because he is trying to be “independent”. Derrick has a habit of going too far in an effort to prove himself, consciously or not, and will usually take on far more than he can handle, leading him to have bursts of productivity followed by exhaustion and sickness.

—Weakness Name: Child at Heart (causes each boost to Understanding to be halved)
—Description: Although Derrick is rather bright and capable, he is, in reality very childish at times. He is not above throwing a tantrum should things not go his way, lashing out at people he feels has wronged him even over little things, and can be very possessive over his belongings. This can at times put a strain on his relationships and cause him to act based on his feelings more so than what is logically sound at the time.

—Weakness Name: Thinned blood (Medication side-effect; Movement/Speed weakness)
—Description: The medication Derrick takes thins his blood to an almost alarming degree. Not only does he bruise easily and get fatigued quickly as a result, but his blood is unable to clot normally and he can potentially lose large amounts of blood if cuts or wounds are left untreated. If Derrick is in a dungeon, he will only be able to move 3 blocks due to being fatigued unless A) A speed/agility buff is used on him, or B) another party member supports Derrick; both options will only increase his movement speed up to 4 blocks max, however. In combat, Derrick’s Luck and Dexterity are reduced by 20%.

The Background

History: Derrick was born to an average family. Besides that his mother was terrible at jokes and his father had a love for literature, there isn’t much else Derrick can remember about them. Both of his parents died when he was five; driving home from a New Year’s party, they hit an icy patch of road and ended up crashing head-first into another car. There were three fatalities, no survivors.
Afterwards, Derrick was sent to the nearest orphanage, one about 50 miles away from his old home, located in Endymion City. It wasn’t long before foster parents opted to take him in, and it took even less time for them to bring him back, realizing that dealing with three adopted children was too much to handle.
This continued for some years, constantly changing hands from adult to adult. Derrick grew used to it, even accepted this as normal. It was during this time that he underwent two very important changes. The first was the desire to be strong on his own; it was very apparent that no one would be taking care of him for a while, so he needed to learn how to do it himself. This was what sparked his need to grow up quickly, grow up fast, and grow up well. The second was far, far more serious.
Just before he turned eight, Derrick began having vision problems. At first he thought he was just sick and having blackouts. But soon it became apparent not only to him, but the orphanage staff that something was very wrong when Derrick began tripping over things in moonlit rooms that the other children could avoid easily, and unable to see someone approaching him from the side. They had him tested, and eventually the doctors diagnosed Derrick with Retinitis Pigmentosa. In short, by the time Derrick is about twenty, give or take a few years, he will have lost almost, if not all of his sight.
Derrick, although upset by this news, resolved to live with it. He saw this as another reason to be able to take care of himself, and immediately took up classes to figure out how to use a blind cane, learn braille, and study up on different accommodations, devices and other useful tools he could use in the future to make living much easier.
At the age of twelve, much to Derrick’s surprise, he was adopted by a woman named Vivian Oates. He assumed this one would be temporary, as were all the others, but he has lived with her for the past year and grown somewhat attached to her, going so far as to call her “mom”.
