| =========================== CHARACTER SHEET =========================== Knight of Infinite Resignation NAME: Amelia Cieca
ARCANA: Hanged Man
AGE: 16
APPEARANCE: Amelia is a high schooler of average height, with unkepmpt brown hair and downcast eyes the color of dull amber. She usually huddles into a baggy white-and-red hoodie when in public, pulling it over her head to distance herself from others. In Gehenna, the hoodie transforms into a white robe, befitting a saint or wise woman of old.
PRONOUNS: she/her
PERSONALITY: Amelia's most common disposition is 'morose and irritable'. She usually avoids interacting with others, studying or roaming Madrial's streets in solitude. She tends to expect the worst from people and situations both, and has a very cynical view of herself and the world. Nonetheless, she is a rather passive person, tending to go with the flow rather than take initiative of any kind. One of the few things that can compel her to act is seeking closure for her parents' death, that burning ache in her chest ever in tension with her fatalism and resignation.
Amelia considers herself a devout person and a follower of Nocto, but the particular expression of her faith is much bleaker than is traditional. To her, Nocto's plans are unknowable, and faith constitutes stepping beyond the confines of rational choice and putting herself in the divine's hands. To live is to endure misfortune and suffering, and to trust in the divine's plans despite that. That's what Amelia herself will tell you, and it's what she always tells herself. And yet, in her heart of hearts, one belief - that her parents' death should not have happened - still endures. And so, she never truly accepts the misfortune she claims to welcome, resenting the world for its unfairness, resenting the divine for making it happen, and at times, even resenting her parents for choosing their jobs instead of her and dying because of it. Much of her cynicism stems from this conflict, this contradiction she can never reconcile.
Her gentler side peeks through in the rare moments when she allows herself to forget about the world's unfairness and simply enjoy a precious moment. She might laugh at a sarcastic joke or share a pleasant memory with someone willing to listen. It is in those moments that she allows herself to smile, before eventually convincing herself once more that this respite is only temporary.
BACKGROUND: Once, Amelia was a regular girl with a good head on her shoulders and a passion for theology. She was daughter to Mercutio and Joanna Cieca, two law enforcement agents of Madrial. Her relationship with her parents was rather strained at the time - both parents prioritised their job over spending time with Amelia, and had plenty of petty disagreements that spilled into their daily lives. For instance, Mercutio insisted Amelia follow in their footsteps, while Joanna would rather she pursue her interest in religious studies. Still, they weren't abusive, and provided for Amelia more than sufficiently.
Then, four years ago, That Day happened. Her memory of the time is fuzzy, but she remembers her parents were guarding an unloading ship in Riva Mare. Something... something bad was happening - she remembers running off to search for her parents. She remembers them lying on the ground, dying or already dead, and herself, calling for help that never came. And after... she remembers the water. The black, shimmering water, and a sprawling city lying beneath.
Afterwards, the world moved on as if nothing had happened. An obituary was printed, and a small funeral was held. The "tragic accident" that killed her parents hadn't even made the news. A kindly old woman from across the street called Befana all but adopted Amelia, providing for her from that point on. The city beneath never came back, no matter how long Amelia would stare at water.
Grandma Befana had a rather... rosy view of Ascanna and its government. To her, Amelia's parents were heroes - heroes who gave their lives for Madrial. That was part of why she took the girl in, and however unintentionally, she never quite let Amelia forget that. She should be proud of her parents, Befana said. Amelia, however, never believed the official story. The scattered images from that night were too vivid, and she could find no comfort in either the government's lies or Befana's glorification. Her grief festered with no release, and in time, took on shades of resentment as well. She sought solace in scripture, but the words on the pages rang hollow. And the fragments of faith she pieced together were cold and steeped in that same resentment, further amplifying her cynicism.
Nowadays, her life has largely returned to normal, but Amelia herself does not move on, holding herself apart from others and watching the waters of Riva Mare in a vain hope for closure. Her social circle fell apart four years ago, and even if it didn't, her bitterness more than suffices for pushing others away even if she consciously doesn't intend it. Instead, she simply studies and lets life carry her from one month into another, one day indistinguishable from another as her minds drifts off to four years ago again and again.

Some say she was not aware of her role until the last moment, believing she was about to be wed as she approached the altar.
APPEARANCE: Iphigenia is an innocent young woman with short, curly brown hair, dressed in a white shawl above a golden-brown toga. A number of taenias - thin strips of black cloth - are tied around her body, with one serving as a blindfold.
