What could POSSIBLY go wrong? [HABIT/Dale]

YOU EVER HEARD THE PHRASE, "TRUST NO ONE, NOT EVEN YOURSELF" YEAH... THAT GOES DOUBLE FOR THE MAGIC MAN YOU CAN PULLOUT OF YOUR SKULL MY FRIEND. YOUR DOG, CHIP RIGHT? NOW THAT'S A FACE YOU CAN TRUST, TAKE IT FROM A GUY WITHOUT ONE, HEH. HABIT shook his head and held back a barley restrained laugh as he heard Dale's next bit. The audacity of it all. This one had a lot to learn if it wanted to get anywhere in this city, and even more if he wanted to grow up big and strong like HABIT.

LOOK PAL, I LIKE YA, SO THIS NEXT TIDBIT IS FREE. KNOWLEDGE IS MORE THEN HALF THE BATTLE, IT'S THE ENTIRE FIGHT. IF YOU KNOW THE RIGHT THING, IT DON'T MATTER HOW HARD YOU CAN SWING YOUR EGO AROUND. KNOWLEDGE MAKES YOU IMPORTANT, KNOWLEDGE GIVES YOU THE EDGE... IT'S LITERALLY THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS. SURE BIG BRAWNY MUSCLES HELPS, BUT THAT'S JUST ICING ON THE CAKE. SPEAKING OF... HABIT turned fromt he odd hobo and began to go the way he had been when he first happened upon Dale. I'M GOIN TO GRAB A BITE, CARE TO JOIN ME?

That...didn't make sense to him. Why wouldn't you trust yourself? What would you even do if you couldn't trust yourself? He didn't know why somebody would say that. Nor did he know why this person was saying he couldn't trust Enkidu.
Of course, that wasn't the alarming part.
The alarming part was that he knew Chip's name. He definitely hadn't mentioned that, and that wasn't something he could know just by looking.
He knew stuff. And he wanted to know how.

Dale's face contorted into a look of confusion at the laughter, right up until the words that followed.
...it made sense, really. He understood what they were on about, and what it meant. You had to know things to be able to do anything, to make things happen - or not. But that was only right if you knew how to use the things you know - which admittedly, was more knowing stuff - and were able to do that. If you couldn't use the things you knew, then they did nothing.
That was usually when the violence started.
When HABIT made his offer, Dale just narrowed his eyes. "...no..." Dale knew better than to go off with someone he'd just met, let alone in the Slums. More than that, though..."You know stuff. Stuff you probably shouldn't know, and probably even more I don't know you know."
"If knowledge is the entire fight, and you know so much more, then going with you without knowing there won't be a fight is a bad idea."

HABIT stopped and turned to Dale, looking through him with his large, red, glassy eyes. He would stand motionless for a moment as the world froze around them. In those glass eyes Dale would see promises of safety and food. Of shelter and of peaceful night's sleep. Yet even deeper he could see the fire and brimstone of damnation, the dark pits of the Under where he himself may one day be condemned to should he fail in the coming trials and tribulations.

...the instant where eyes met, where he saw everything flash by...it unnerved Dale. He didn't know what it meant, and he didn't trust the promises it made.
He glanced aside at Chip, not knowing how to handle this strange feeling. "...I don't want to stay here any more."
