| Shadow King “Just relax. Let me take the wheel and I’ll have everything under control…”
The Biography
|
Birth Name: Steven Vaughn Aliases: “Shadow King,” “King Vaughn” Gender: Male Age: 16 Birth Day: 7/30 Arcana: IV – The Emperor Place of Residence: Little Tokyo Academy Semester: 2nd Class: A
Sorority: Theatre
Part/Full Time Job: Seven Star Academy - Tutor
Base & Transformed Appearance:
- Base Appearance:
Base In his base state, Steven Vaughn looks almost abnormally normal. His skin is pale but still has a healthy rosiness to it that coalesces around the light sprinkling of pale red freckles that dot his cheeks, cross the bridge of his nose, and trail down the tops of his forearms. His dirty brown hair is mostly straight and relatively short, just enough to cover his ears and his forehead. He’s a bit on the short side, standing around 5’6”, and has an average build in terms of weight and muscle mass. There is a slight leanness to him that makes itself apparent when he exerts effort, but otherwise it is easy to assume that he is as strong as—or perhaps even slightly weaker than—the average high school kid. There is a youthfulness to his round facial features that makes him look even more like a child than he already is. His cheeks are round like his nose, which is small and slightly upturned. His brows are thin and arch perfectly over his almond-shaped eyes, which are what really denote his age and identity as a shadow. Naturally, his irises are a striking yellow, which help them stand out as his eyes appear baggy and sunken-in in their sockets. When his expression is neutral, this causes him to always seem tired or annoyed, and when smiling or frowning, gives him a faint air of madness.
Steven is a fan of urban wear, consisting primarily of jersey-style T-shirts, baggy jeans, and canvas athletic shoes that seem more for appearance than practicality. His favorite outfit is a red jersey T-shirt bearing a yellow roman numeral 4, a pair of dark denim jeans, and red canvas shoes. He is never seen without his cloak and crown, both of which are made of a blue velvety cloth that is heavier than it might initially seem and a white fur pocked with small black spots. The crown is of an English style, ribbed with gold, and the cloak is held together by a small gold chain attached to a diamond-shaped brooch encrusted with a red gem similar to that crowning his scepter. Another thing he isn’t seen without, the mace-like weapon is usually kept tucked into a belt loop at his side when not in use.
Transformed Truly a grotesque and confusing sight to behold, at first glance Shadow King’s true state resembles a cross between an anthropomorphic lion and a Barong dance costume. Most of his body—now standing easily ten feet tall—is hidden beneath his cloak, which resembles the one he wears in his base form. It is much longer now, however, trailing the ground as he lumbers along as if old and decrepit. Still, the silhouette of his form can be seen even through this thick cloth, his body stiff and hunched like a crippled, monstrous beast. What his cloak doesn’t obscure is hidden instead by a thick white mane, seemingly a longer version of the black-spotted white fur that fringes his cloak. It frames his face much like a lion’s would, though its texture is disgustingly thick and greasy. His face is partially hidden by a masquerade mask, which resembles that of Barong’s crown, but it can still be seen that it is human skin wrapped around a facial structure halfway between human and feline.
When his arms and legs protrude from beneath his cloak it becomes apparent that they too are somewhere between human and feline. The limbs are draped in long white fur, not spotted like his mane, but just as greasy and disgusting to touch. His hands are dexterous and human-like, but thickly padded with black, leathery flesh and bear long, curved black claws. His feet are four-toed paws with the same long claws, attached to digitigrade legs.
Personality: It can be said that Steven Vaughn has two distinct “states” of being, and that his temperament at any given time varies on a spectrum between those two states. It all depends solely on how much control he feels over he has over a given situation. In general, he is a mellow individual with an aura of confidence and leadership. He loves playing social games and being the center of attention, and when really in his element may become a bit cocky or condescending. He has a very sarcastic and belittling sense of humor that takes those with a thick skin to appreciate, and his quick wit is apparent regardless of his mood. Still, he thrives on interaction with others, and thus when he is left alone he tends to become anxious and moody.
When all is going well in his life, or when he’s given a position of unparalleled leadership, one would almost be hard-pressed to find fault with him. He is gentle and almost fatherly to friends and allies, making sure that everyone around him is content and cared for. He exudes an air of assurance and certainty, and carries himself in a fashion worthy of his kingly self-image. It’s constantly on his mind to ensure others that he has everything under control and that they can place their trust in him, which they can; a king’s word should be upheld no matter what, after all. Of course for the most part, it’s all a manipulative act. A mask of the old Steven Vaughn to hide the shadow of the boy that remains.
Shadow King shows his true face when he isn’t in control of a situation. When someone refuses to follow his lead, or things take a turn for the worse, he becomes increasingly agitated. It starts as a slight edge to his tone and obvious tics and tells that denote cracks in his calm, regal demeanor. From there it only escalates until he’s throwing a childlike tantrum, ranting, barking orders, and physically lashing out. When he doesn’t get his way, he doesn’t care about anyone or anything but himself; even that is questionable as he throws himself at any threat to his pride or wellbeing. He becomes a tyrant, intimidating, and pummeling his way into getting what he wants. And the worst of it is that he enjoys it, because to him it’s still a show of dominance to whoever happens to be on the receiving end of his wrath.
Ultimately, King Vaughn wants nothing more than control, nothing more than power over others. To him, the measure of one’s worth is in how many one is able to sway to their purposes. He is perceptive and manipulative, always planning his next word or action so that he comes out on top. He prefers not to let his tyrant side show, instead enjoying the process of befriending others and earning their trust. He knows, after all, that a trusted ally is much more obedient than a forced one, and that if he’s careful enough, he can surround himself with people who will obey his every order and come to his aid even when his ego has taken over and morality no longer becomes a factor.
Before the Shadow Before becoming a Shadow, Steven didn’t seem to be nearly as much of a leader as he would become. He genuinely cared for others around them and would say something if he thought they were doing something stupid, but he was still lacking in the empathy department. This, combined with his perpetual, subconscious bitterness at feeling powerless against the flow of the life chosen for him made him come off as moody, condescending, and abrasive. So really, just your average teen.

The Potential
|
Strengths: (Anything your character is skilled in, such as Martial Arts/Drawing/ etc? You are allowed a maximum of five strengths and a minimum of three.)
—Strength Name: Leadership —Description: Stephen didn’t earn the title of Shadow King for nothing; he is a natural leader whose aura of charismatic confidence leads those of weaker wills to believe that his direction has their best interests in mind. (Reduces dungeon travel time from 400 to 200 words.)
—Strength Name: Fearlessness —Description: There’s no other way to put it; it takes a lot to intimidate Steven. Even with he’s ridiculously and obviously outmatched, he faces situations where most would flee or fall apart with a cocky grin.
—Strength Name: Endurance —Description: If there’s one thing that being a relatively wimpy-looking, pretentious asshole teaches you, it’s how to take a beating. Steven is one of those guys who would likely get knocked to the floor at the first punch, but he’d get right back up and would continue to do so in the same infuriatingly stubborn manner until there was no longer a shred of life left in him. (Will not feel fatigued below 10% health.)
—Strength Name: Grace —Description: In shaping his regal self-image, Steven has developed his agility and dexterity to the point where any form of motion seems just as calculated and deliberate as it does elegant and effortless. It allows him to act swiftly and with precision, and frighteningly enough it gets better (or perhaps worse?) when he’s in a frenzy. (Can attack twice in one post with Soul bound weapon.)
----- ((A floating Strength is a strength you've gained inRP. For example, if you were on a Kendo team for some time, you'd naturally know Kendo which is where this strength would come in. However, be aware, it will not be as strong as any of your actual strengths and is a small plus)
—Floating Strength Name: —Description:
Weaknesses: (You must have the same amount of weaknesses as strengths. These weaknesses pertain to you and not your Persona. IE: Physically Weaker, lack of attention span, etc.)
—Weakness Name: Temper —Description: The crux of Steven’s character is control. If he can’t take charge of a situation, or if he simply can’t get his way, then he flies into a rage similar to a child throwing a tantrum. All of his kingly charisma goes out the window, and the tyrant behind the mask is laid bare.
—Weakness Name: Cockiness —Description: Steven is confident in his abilities, but not quite arrogant. He knows not to underestimate those around him, and that he isn’t the best at everything. He does, however, believe that he’s the best at whatever he is good at.
—Weakness Name: Chains of Paradox —Description: Shadow King’s true form is garbed in chains that represent his central paradox. He has thrown away the chance to become a Persona—a power strengthened by bonds—in order to use his power as a Shadow to force others to swear their loyalty to him. These chains do exactly what you’d expect them to, and provide a terrible hindrance to his movement. (-15% Luck in True Form)
—Weakness Name: Recklessness —Description: Steven somehow has it in his head that he’s invincible, and not even he can fully explain why. It just seems like a natural conclusion to him that a king be impossible to kill, and because he is so good at the things he’s good at (according to him), no one could hope to match him. This shows primarily in combat, where he throws himself into dangerous situations with little regard for the beating he may take. (-15% Luck when evading attacks.)
----- ((A floating weakness is one gained in RP. It could be a fear you inherited during RP, or an injury that hinders your character. Some can be temporary while others can be permanent.)
—Floating Weakness Name: —Description:
Soul Bound Weapon:
Weapon Name: Shadow King’s Scepter Weapon Description: Simple yet extravagant at the same time, this scepter truly reflects Steven’s kingly yet savage nature. Built on a plain, golden shaft roughly a foot and a half long, this status symbol of a weapon is topped with a large, rather heavy red gem of some sort. The gem’s vaguely rectangular cut makes the weapon appear to be an overly fancy mace, which is exactly how Shadow King uses it. Side-Arm Weapon: None
Side-Arm Name: Side-Arm Description: Side-Arm Image: (Not necessary) Side-Arm Attack Type: Side-Arm Style:

The Background
|
History: Steven Vaughn was a kid born with expectations. His father was a high-ranking employee in a local shipping corporation, and his mother taught business at a small college. They tried to leave themselves open to whatever Steven might’ve wished to become, but there was always a subtle pressure for him to grow up and either start his own business or let his father shoehorn him into a position at his own company. Young Steven didn’t see much issue in this, but as he grew older he began to feel less and less in control of his life. He listened to his friends prattle on about hopes and dreams for their adulthoods, and was frustrated when his parents wouldn’t seem to hear that he didn’t want to pursue a career in business.
It was never a direct disapproval of his wishes, but as Steven grew older he began to see more and more of the rail his parents were laying down for the train that was his life. They hired tutors to make him a better speaker, writer, and mathematician. He was taught how to be presentable in both appearance and manner, and how to negotiate. His father would talk of pulling strings at work to get him a position, and his mother would give him the same confused, pitying look when he spoke of maybe being an actor or director. He’d be better off starting his own film company, or working his way up the ladder of a film corporation, she’d say.
It was a suggestion he clung to as he became a teenager, to give himself the illusion that he had chosen his own path in life. It still felt wrong, though. He knew his parents only wanted what was in his best interests, and he didn’t want to upset them or throw away all that they had done for him. Still, it pained him to know that under their “rule,” his dreams were literally unattainable. As he entered his first year of high school, he swiftly began to place a rift between himself and his parents by joining Theatre and rejecting any suggestions they gave about his future. After that, he simply began speaking to them less and less, until any interaction was either a bitter exchange or a full-on argument. His parents simply thought it was the result of that “teenage rebellion,” but no one—not even Steven—could see the storm forming on the horizon…
