Part Time Job: Street Vendor. He goes from place to place, selling on the streets whatever he gets his hands on in order to live by.
Appearance: Leander has the average height of a young man his age (180 cm tall), weights 70 kg, short dark hair, yellow eyes and pale skin. He’s also rather skinny, mostly because of years of having only enough food to live by. Leander also has the appearance of a wanderer, usually wearing a traveling coat, brown pants, boots and a white shirt that has seen better days. He uses this attire regardless of the season, as he’s always on the move and it’d be bad if he needed to traverse through a forest or a mountain without having the appropriate clothing for the task.
There are other traits that may call someone’s attention: the first one is the big backpack that he always carries around with him. Inside this backpack is everything that he’ll ever need: food, survival supplies, notebooks to write down his experiences, items to sell on the streets and several other things that may be useful for someone with his lifestyle. The other is the oil lamp that hangs from one side of this backpack. It’s an old-looking oil lamp that Leander always lights up when walking at night, even if he’s in the middle of a city or in a well-lit place (reasons explained in his background story).
Personality: Despite being a “hermit” of sorts, he’s by no means an unsociable person: if approached, he’ll merrily have a chat with others, and if someone ever needs something from him, he’ll do his best to help. That doesn’t mean that he’s a selfless person that goes around the world saving people in need: he always tries to find a way to profit from the situation, usually in the form of asking for information in exchange for his help or another favor (food if he doesn’t have enough money to afford it, for example). He’s generally a good person, however, and will help out without asking for anything (though reluctantly) if it’s something really important.
Leander thirsts for knowledge. This is the reason why he was such a good student and how he managed to easily pass 2 whole years of college. If it’s something within his range of interests, then he’ll investigate it until there’s nothing else to know. He’s particularly fond of myths and legends, and knows a lot about the many mythological entities that mankind has created over the years.

—Description: Leander’s condition makes it difficult for him to see properly, even in well-lit places, the reason being that his eyes absorb less light from his environment, and thus everything looks darker than it should.

—Description: He has a tendency of finding trouble wherever he goes, which more often than not means that his life is usually at risk. From his point of view, however, this isn’t so bad, as it gives him the possibility of meeting unusual people and creatures.

—Description: Leander is a traveler, and thus is always moving from place to place without staying anywhere for too long. This makes him a pain to find, and it’s usually easier for him to come to you than the other way around.

Weapon Description: It looks like an old, square oil lamp, made entirely out of steel metal. Big, 55 cm long (including handle). It looks fragile at first glance, but it’s actually extremely sturdy and hard to break, useful for hitting others if needed and to use it as a shield to defend against other physical attacks.

The Background
|
History: Leander Arni was born to a poor but cheerful family in Standasen Island. It was clear that something was wrong with him from the time he was born: he always looked disoriented, as if he couldn’t look straight at things, and he always needed help to find his way even through his own house. His parents feared that he may have been born with an illness, and quickly gathered enough money to bring him to a doctor.
As they feared, there was really something wrong with him, but not as serious as they thought: Leander’s eyes were simply unable to absorb the same amount of light a normal pair of eyes would. His world was one covered in darkness: sunlight reached him as if forced through a filter of dark clouds, and a room with only a few artificial lights around was the same as a pitch-black room for him. It wasn’t a disease per se, and “curing” him would be extremely expensive, but it wasn’t something the kid couldn’t get used to, and thus his family opted to leave him like that.
The darkness was bothersome, but Leander still managed to lead a normal life as he grew older. He got used to walking to the dark, and under no lights, he was better at finding his way through different places than everyone else. He later learned that carrying a lantern around helped him see his immediate surroundings much better, and he got used to carrying a wax lantern or oil lamp wherever he went.
Despite being poor, he was smart enough to get into Zela Academy. He joined the literature club, fascinated by the ancient tales of creatures and gods, and after three years of high school he graduated as the best in his class. He proceeded to study Business Engineering at a university in San Malarus Island, in hopes of graduating and getting a profitable job in the future, but despite doing well, he eventually lost all interest on it and dropped out after two years.
Not knowing where to go with his life, he decided to spend a year or so traveling through the world, seeing different places and hopefully finding what he wanted to do. His parents accepted his decision and sent him off. For almost two years he moved from place to place, learning many different things and skills. And as time passed, he began to notice that some places had “thicker” darkness than others. Places filled with malice or places where bad things had happened. The region known as Ueitawa was especially bad, and though he didn’t know all the details, Leander knew that some strange things had happened there a few years before. And when he finally returned to the Azores Region, he felt the same type of darkness around him. Feeling that strange things were going to happen there, Leander kept his hermit-like lifestyle in order to have the freedom to go wherever he wanted and hopefully learn more about the strange sensation that thick darkness was giving him.
