Appearance: Akari has a rather unassuming look about her at first glance. One could easily pass their eyes over her in a crowd and give no second thought to what her story might be, or what role she might occupy in the world around her. Her hair is a light charcoal color and puffs out from her head. She doesn't take very good care of her hair, so it's pretty dry and unkempt. The girl's skin is light, as she doesn't get much sunlight if given the choice. Her eyes are probably the most notable thing about her face, as they're a vibrant cherry color, but they're obscured behind thick glasses. She stands at about 5'4" (162 cm) without shoes on. Akari's clothing keeps this sort of gray, drab motif. She wears a black and white striped, thin fabric hoodie under a thick gray sweatshirt with black sakura flowers on the wrists. She has on a pleated skirt that's similar to her hair color, as she thinks pants are a general pain to wear. Tall black boots reach up to her mid thigh, and their soles add an inch onto her height.

Alternate Appearance: Upon invoking her persona, the Mask applies itself to her in the form of a flowing, dark green jacket that reaches down to her ankles. A necklace of nine fish skulls appears around her neck, which dangles down to her midsection. Gauntlets made of cloth wrap themselves around her hands. Red bindings fit themselves around her waist. The mask itself completely covers her face but reveals her two vividly colored eyes. It is covered in a red pigment but has stripes of white dripping from the top. Two medium sized, black horns protrude from the forehead of the mask. A sharp-toothed grin with oversized canines is displayed front and center.

Personality: Akari is blunt, straightforward, and to the point. She despises those who need to dance around topics in order to get out the words they wish to express. This isn't to say that she's a mean or bad person, not at all. In reality, she cares a great deal for others but isn't all that fond of trying to mince her words to let them appeal to a wider audience. She can't help but say what she means whenever it strikes her mind. If someone has a problem with what she says, Akari simply leaves it up to them to handle rather than letting it burden her conscience. This lands her in conflict quite often with those who are all too often eager to tease her. Aside from that, the girl often keeps to herself rather than putting herself into the spotlight. She often remarks how tiring it is to be at the center of attention.

The Background

History: Akari Shimabukuro was born to Tamiko Shimabukuro and Aikuro Shimabukuro without any complications in her birth. She spent the early years of her life in absolute comfort, though fate had a rather different plan for her. Before she could enter her first years of schooling, her father lost his job as a salaryman after an unfortunate series of events relating to unkempt ties to a failing business. Her family was thrown into poverty, moving from their large apartment high in the sky to a cramped apartment not too far from the red light district of Little Tokyo. Akari was instructed by her parents not to speak to strangers no matter what on her walks to school. Though, this advice did more harm than good, as she began to take their words the wrong way. She did not speak to the other children in class, and refrained from being chosen for activities in class. She started to observe others and the way they behaved, rather than engaging in those behaviors herself. The girl noticed painfully similar patterns in the way children acted in certain situations, and this habit of hers has continued on to even this day. Her parents tried to resolve this issue by getting her involved with her school's music program, but instead of forming friendships with the other children, she merely studied the piano on her own.

She quickly became disenchanted with the world around her soon after leaving elementary school, realizing that the patterns she noticed in her early years did not go away, but simply built upon each other and evolved. All this time, she failed to realize that she herself was falling into a pit of her own. Sure, Akari had a deeper understanding of others than they might prefer, but she had grown estranged with her own emotions. The only thing that kept her mind off of the slow realization was her piano. The repetitions and flows engaged her brain in such a wonderful way, it let the stresses of daily life simply fall from her shoulders. Much to her dismay, this led to one particular student finding interest in her. He introduced himself as Ryo. Akari and Ryo had quite a rocky start, but through persistence, the strange enigmatic boy seemed to have broken into her shell and helped her realize the cold state she'd dug herself into. With his assistance, she began her journey to recover her lost emotions and come to a better place of being. While she certainly was an improved human being, faults were still present in her personality. Akari had come to appreciate and care for other people again, but couldn't help but criticize when they were being unreasonable and give less than helpful advice to those who didn't request it. Before helping her with these issues, Ryo disappeared after the night of the Eternal Divide. Distraught by the apparent betrayal of her friend, Akari once again shut herself off to the kindness of others and has been that way since.
