Current Events
Updated: 20/07/2020

**ALERT!** After a rather eventful evening at Maksim's Party, three teenagers seems to have gone missing. The doors of Vault Olympia have been breached due to a to this day unknown assailant, who sabotaged the doors locking systems, allowing demons to make entry. Thanks to the excellent defensive capabilities of the Vault's Security drones, the Attack was put to an end, and the invading monsters fled to the outside. Right now, the Doors of Vault Olympia are currently open, allowing any survivors of the fall to seek shelter within the Vault's safe halls. What Vault Security officials think of this development remains unclear as the Chief of Police and Security of Olympia refused to leave a comment. This is Rianara, of Olympia news, signing out.

The site is entering a new era as our team of mods works tirelessly on updating old and obsolete information threads and links. Over the Summer, we aim to make many changes to the forum, including writing a comprehensive beginners' guide to help new players accommodate to the combat and other rp systems in place here.

Hard to get a reading on: (For Phoenix): Empty
PostSubject: Hard to get a reading on: (For Phoenix):   Hard to get a reading on: (For Phoenix): EmptyMon Nov 14, 2016 7:18 pm

Axel found himself once more in the library he had been finding himself in more and more often lately. He needed to study if he wanted to make the cadets...
Now if he could just find the books he needed...
"There's gotta be a free assistant somewhere around here..." he muttered as he walked amongst the maze of bookshelves.
Eventually, he found one that appeared to be almost finished shelving books.
Axel quietly tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention.
"Hi, excuse me, but do you know where I could find the books concerning physics?" He asked him quietly once he had done so.

Such a drag. People could really be unnecessarily messy at times. Pointing people to the right places to look at would be much easier if it weren't for those specialists who grabbed some books and then were too lazy to return them to where they belong, and instead just dumped them on a random shelf. How is anyone supposed to find anything when it isn't even in its rightful place? This is a library, not everyone's bedroom which they can arrange the way they wish. How bothersome.

That particular bother was in fact why Phoenix had to busy himself rearranging some of the books that day, instead of spending his time at his front desk, more or less. This could really be a tedious task to accomplish, and such a time waster, but at the very least, he remembered specific books well enough to not have a lot of trouble locating what he needed in a decent amount of time. Maybe he'd be able to finish this early enough to still get some time to read a random book before the end of the shift...

...if it wasn't for someone interrupting him during his work, that is. Right. There would obviously be some customers around too, it's not like he was doing this during closed hours. Holding a random book concerning Geography in his hand, he would look over his shoulder, red eyes glancing over the man in question casually. ''Most books concerning Physics are located on the shelves on the far right end of where you are right now. If you happen to need interdisciplinary sciences related to it though, they're on the right end in the next row.'' Most of those were fairly close by, since he was working on similar subjects at the moment, but in the end, it would depend on the specific titles sought after.

Okay. So far so good. This kid seemed to know here fairly well. He made a note of it.
"Alright. Do you know where the books on Thermodynamics are? I'm looking for the collected copy of Theresa Diana's Thesises on Heat Transference." He asked him. It was one of the texts he needed to study on... it had been too long since he last cracked open a Scientific Journal on such. He seriously needed to catch up with the rest of the scientific community on this sort of thing. He needed a backup plan if his legs ever got busted, after all.

Thermodynamics? That's just a subject studied within Physics, isn't it? The guy could have just asked about that in the first place if he wasn't planning on searching through the Physics area in general anyway. Well, it only wasted him a little bit of extra time, so it was no big deal, but Phoenix never stopped to wonder as to why people liked doing that. If you already know a specific book you're after, why even ask something else first, unless you actually need to know that extra bit of info for real.

Hard to get a reading on: (For Phoenix): KOlv0Rf

''I do believe that would fall under Physics, so same place I told you before. The books ought to be ordered alphabetically by the authors' names, so try searching that way. Where each letter starts should be noted on the sides of the corresponding shelves. You should be able to find it unless some 'bright' customer from before left it somewhere wrong and I haven't noticed yet.''

He would glance at the shelf he was at briefly, putting down the book he had been holding. To be honest, some people really made the job harder than it should be, and it wasn't always possible to notice every little mistake that can happen due to irresponsibility of random customers who don't know how to put a book back where they took it from after checking it out.

"Alright. Thanks." Axel said as he went off. Just as the kid said, it was there. He took it off the shelf before heading back to where the kid was.
"Say... what's your name, young man? I don't see many people like you these days in a library, let alone working in on one. I'm honestly curious." Axel asked him quietly.

Phoenix would watch the man retreat for a moment, before turning back to his work. He still had a bunch of books to sort before he would be done for now. Unless, God forbid, he'd find more errors before even getting a break. Which was entirely possible, but he would just mentally shrug over that option. Work is work after all. And this was still better than some of the more annoying choices when it came to a job. People who were a pain to deal with happened everywhere, but at least it was more likely to meet someone smarter in a library of all places.

When the man returned, the blue haired man was in the middle of squinting at the cover of some book which had its title written out in fairly small letters. Having been interrupted once again, he would turn his head towards the guy with a blink. ''Phoenix. I find this to be one of the less tedious jobs to be doing. At least most people who come here aren't the completely stupid sort. I would say it suits my tastes well enough.'', he would answer in a rather direct manner, giving the man a contemplative look for a second before glancing at the book he was holding. ''So, you think it's unusual for a certain group of people to spend time in a library. Why is that so?'' It was probably an unnecessary tidbit of info, but he was mildly curious as to why the man thought that way. People certainly had rather unpleasant inclination at times, he knew that very well, but it was mildly interesting to hear the opinion of random individuals at times as well.

He noted the boy's name. He seemed okay, if a bit rude judging from his words. "Well... it's because most youth I see tend to be either cooped up at home playing video games, or are often socializing with their friends or otherwise outside. That, and most of them don't even crack open a book unless told to. That's why." Axel said.

''Right.'' Well, he couldn't deny that it was pretty much the truth. It was definitely easier to stay sitting home and play some games to pass your time. Although, he would wager that too much of anything could easily become boring as well, so doing that all the time sounded like a major recipe for routine, just like some machine. Which, considering his situation, was at the very least mildly amusing. People don't know what all they really have right before their eyes, unless they happen to lose it, or come anywhere close to doing so. ''I can't deny that. The majority likes to look at the world in simple terms. It tends to be much easier than trying to educate yourself in any significant way.'', he would state, as he tapped the book still in his hand against his chin lightly.

He wouldn't say most adults were any better though. They were very capable of being ignorant as well, even if it may show in different ways than it does when it comes to younger people. ''Considering you asked, does that mean you don't like said types of young people?'' Of course, it could have just been an attempt at random small talk, but he was somewhat better at cutting to the chase anyway, and it wasn't often that people would ask him such things when they were here mostly to pick up the books they needed after all.

He had to agree with the boy's words on that remark.
"Yes... it's sad that so many forget that education is a needed part to succeed, eh?" He responded.
"While I don't exactly like them, I do wish I could convince them to change..." he answered.

Yes? No? Maybe? It is certainly a smart option to educate yourself, but being smart isn't always linked only to how much one pursues learning complex topics and reading books. Yes, for some it had a profound effect, and it was always helpful, but there were also people who read plenty of books and were still rather behind on gray brain matter. Technically speaking. But that's if one wanted to use biological terms that most people do not even care about, that is.

Hard to get a reading on: (For Phoenix): PkmeID1

''I would say that having the will to push forward is more important. Everyone has to indulge in some education nowadays, thanks to school, but that certainly doesn't mean everyone is all that smart and successful just because of it.''

The effect of education is equal to how much you yourself choose to use it and practice it. Even a genius can be useless if they never act on what they know. ''You think it's possible to change people who have no interest in bettering themselves?'' How many of them actually listen to words of advice instead of letting it go one ear in, another out?

True. That much has been proven by history. He nodded at those words.
But the second phrase was something that caught him particularly well.
"Well... you can't. Not fully. I like to think that what I do is convince them to change. My name's Axel Allen. I'm a motivational speaker. Sorry for not introducing myself earlier." He said to the boy.

Oh? Was that so? What's a man with that kind of job doing by looking into Physics then? Those fields sounded as unrelated as plants and architecture, to be honest. Phoenix would offer the man a half-hearted shrug. ''I tend to not ask people for names anyway. Too many come around for me to remember every single one I happen to assist, unless they are interesting enough in some way.'' It wasn't typical of him to ask, aside from exceptions when he was intrigued enough to be the one to ask before they considered telling him their name by themselves. Of course, he could actually remember many easily. Perhaps he just didn't always bother to go the extra mile though, as the majority of people he interacted with weren't ones he would ever meet again.

Sticking the book he was holding under his other arm, he would stare the man down with mild curiosity. ''Motivational speaker, huh? Why are you lookin' up Physics then? Sounds pretty unrelated to me. Thermodynamics probably won't convince anyone, outside of boring the less enthusiastic people to death.'' Scientific studies tended to be boring to people who weren't already interested in them, and he would honestly link being motivational to very different areas in the first place.

Alright. The first kinda made sense... even if that was a bit rude.
"I'm looking it up to apply for the cadets. You never know what kind of entry exam they have. And it's been ages since I last reviewed over that sort of thing, so... yeah." Axel answered.

Hah, nice. Well, this guy had ambitions, he'd give him that. Though, he had to wonder. Was it so wise to speak of wanting to be one of those elite Cadets before you were one? Phoenix only knew the rumors at this point, but the Terrorist protesters were a thing, if it was to be believed. Meeting one and bragging to them about this without knowing could be your death sentence if they were truly serious about fighting against the government. Then again, props for the courage?

''Knowing details about science sounds a bit too specific to me. I would think their primary objective would be the ability to fight smart to defeat any opposition to the government. Physics is a nice complementary, but next to no people would pass if in depth knowledge of it was required to even pass. In my personal opinion, at the very least.''

Was it normal to assume you needed to know that to attempt to join as a government fighter? He didn't think they gave out any guidelines for entry exams like schools typically do. To his current knowledge, at least.

He would give Axel a faint smirk. ''Aren't you even worried I might be against the government though? You've got guts to speak of your goals before even being a Cadet, considering you wouldn't have ways to defend yourself properly yet.'' But hey, maybe they valued that kind of ambition? Personally though, he would be more careful about saying that to someone's face when not yet being a part of the group to begin with.

True. But he figured it couldn't hurt. Besides, he had a feeling it might come in handy anyway...
Although he did have a point about the ambitions. Kinda.
He COULD be with the government, but seeing as how neither of them had done anything particularly suspicious yet, neither had any reason to suspect the other.
Although the defense thing was kind of a shoo-in.
"Heh. Oh, I can defend myself... kinda. I've been practicing boxing for the last 5 years. Gotten pretty good at it. Although you do kind of have a point there otherwise." He said, chuckling quietly as he did so.
