| The sounds of bats smashing balls carried on for a while as the silence was hardly uncomfortable, but rather, welcoming. Shouhei figured Tamsin to be the quiet type from the get go and he was at least grateful to get some words out of her. Just as he was about to reach into the bag for more to aim for the fences, his rummaging found no more.
“...Ah, I’m out. Time for us to go play fetch, yeah? Also if you’re runnin’ low on balls, you can keep some of mine. You’d put ‘em to better use than me,” Shouhei honestly noted.

| Tamsin was standing off to the side with her bat dangling between two fingers, looking off in the distance at nothing in particular, as Shouhei dug around in his bag and discovered he was out of balls. She nodded at first, then her face flushed a little when he said she could have some of his balls. She blinked. "You...mean it? Really?" She asked in open disbelief, eyes trailing the beat up old pale she'd carried her balls out here in. | |

| “...Why would I joke about that? I ain’t that cruel,” Shouhei shook his head and uttered a light chuckle as he walked off to scrounge up the baseballs. This Tamsin was almost too adorable for his tastes- the blushing, the disbelief. It tugged a bit at his proverbial heart strings. However that brought up a point he considered to ask, “People mistreat you a lot or somethin’? Ya seem like an okay, if quiet, lady to me.” | |

| Tamsin's face had mostly returned to normal by the time he was walking off to pick up the base balls. Tamsin watched him for only a moment before she followed. Their balls were easily distinguishable. Hers were ratty and old, some were fraying in places and almost all of them had marker lines drawn over them in nonsensical patterns from the other kids at the orphanage Ricky drew on everything he could get his hands on, the brat.
Tamsin dropped one of her balls into her pale before answering. "Mistreat? I don't know, not really. The Orphanage isn't a bad place. I just don't get a lot of Charity. I like to earn things. People don't just give things to me like this. Except Isaac. But he's one of us so it doesn't count." She explained simply. "Is there something I can do? To pay you back for the balls, I mean. I don't like owing people." She added finally. She'd tried to just accept his charity, but it was hard to do, and she really wanted to feel less like a poor orphan mooching off of people's kindness all of the time.

| “...They’re just baseballs, Tamsin. You don’t owe me anythin’. But I admire your ethics, I think the same way.” Shouhei paused a moment to light up a cigarette; its clove scent filled the air. He also didn’t mean to offend her- after all, how could he know she was an orphan? He picked up one of her well worn baseballs and placed it in his bag, again shaking his head. “And don’t think this is a charity case either, I really meant what I said in that you’d make better use of these than me. I’m busy most of the time.” | |

| She nodded once, understanding. She went to pick up the balls in silence then, for the most part, dropping ball after ball into her bucket, until her conscience wouldn't let her add any more. When they had finished picking up the balls, it was just past noon, and she was getting hungry. Despite the donut she'd had earlier. It was probably about time to get something to eat. It'd been a good day for practice.
She touched her stomach with the hand that wasn't holding the pale as it growled defiantly. Probably should have stopped in for breakfast this morning. Toast or something. In any case, she looked up at shouhei and said, "It's probably time I got going. If I take too long I'll miss lunch." She sounded a little forlorn about it. It would be just her luck to show up after everyone had finished eating and nothing was left...

| ...I offered you my last doughnut too, ya goof, Shouhei answered her mentally. He knew if he offered it again she would flat out refuse so he didn’t bother. There was one last thing he could offer her however. A cloud of smoke covered his face momentarily, only to reveal a smile.
“If ya need a ride, I can give ya one. Can’t miss lunch, it’s just as important as breakfast, yeah?”

| "Can't miss lunch it's just as important as breakfast."
Damnit she wasn't about to tell him she hadn't eaten that either. She looked at him for a moment of something between surprised and distrust - like people just weren't this nice to random kids they just met. But then she sighed. He reminded her of Isaac in that way though, and it wasn't bad. "Okay, if you wouldn't mind." She said finally. It always stung asking for help, or accepting it. But it was getting easier. And in truth...she'd always wanted to ride a motorcycle.

| “Wear this,” he handed her his helmet, then began securing their belongings on the bike. “And hold on tight to the sides, or the back of my coat. I’ll try not to go too fast.”When all was said and done the two tore off down the roads of East Eden, leaving a trail of baseball dirt in their wake. - Spoiler:
