What is a Prestige Class?:A Prestige Class is an unlockable class through gameplay or story which becomes available at some point in any given Plot, upon DM Discretion of course. These come often with an entirely new way they work in terms of leveling up that's different from the normal New Arcana Experience, to give seasoned veterans, and budding new players, something interesting to try.
The means of aquiring a Prestige Class differs on a case by case basis. In the Past, we've had Demon Summoners as a playable class, which were unlocked either as a Class available in a Plot Follow-up, or through the story progression in Endymion. I am happy to say that Demon Summoners are making a return (with a few mechanical tweaks) to New Arcana in Paris 2054, in the future. Alongside the Demon summoner comes a new Prestige Class, which I'd like to delve into today, namely because it's not a class you can just pick up and play... To play a Darkened, you have to become one.
The Darkened:Darkened is something that's exclusive to the Story of "In Search of Salvation", though I'm not stopping future plot hosts from using the concept. It's actually pretty cool, if I dare say so myself. So what is a Darkened?
Well, a Darkened is a Player Character who has lost their potential through some kind of In-Story event, and thus have to rely on the use of Umbral Skills to grow further. Darkened differ from the other classes in 2 ways: The way their skill set fundamentally works, and their Class ability.
A Darkened starts out with 3 Free Umbral Skill Slots, from which they may pick any skills they previously unlocked through leveling up. Like the other classes, their skill slots open up as you use your Umbral Skills, and evolve them. Each time you rank up, you are given 1 new Umbral Skill Slot, with a maximum of 8 total. Umbral Skills themselves are highly modular (Explained
here.), and you're free to mix and match skills and build as you see fit.
The other big difference is that as a Darkened, you don't have a set "Class Ability". Your Class Ability is entirely determined by the class you used to play before losing your powers. These Dark Class Abilities are weaker than their normal counterparts, to compensate for the insane level of customizability their kit provides.
There are ways to regain your powers, which differs depending on Class. The Intent for the Darkened Prestige Class is to be something temporary, and not something you keep with you forever. Restoring the Light has its benefits, which I am not going to spoil, as I'd rather leave some mystery regarding this class for the future.
While Darkened, you also get a new Role Color on both the Site and the Discord, to separate you from your peers with their powers intact.
