Current Events
Updated: 20/07/2020

**ALERT!** After a rather eventful evening at Maksim's Party, three teenagers seems to have gone missing. The doors of Vault Olympia have been breached due to a to this day unknown assailant, who sabotaged the doors locking systems, allowing demons to make entry. Thanks to the excellent defensive capabilities of the Vault's Security drones, the Attack was put to an end, and the invading monsters fled to the outside. Right now, the Doors of Vault Olympia are currently open, allowing any survivors of the fall to seek shelter within the Vault's safe halls. What Vault Security officials think of this development remains unclear as the Chief of Police and Security of Olympia refused to leave a comment. This is Rianara, of Olympia news, signing out.

The site is entering a new era as our team of mods works tirelessly on updating old and obsolete information threads and links. Over the Summer, we aim to make many changes to the forum, including writing a comprehensive beginners' guide to help new players accommodate to the combat and other rp systems in place here.

Maria hoped she wasn't late. This morning and the afternoon had been so hectic that it almost made her head spin. But talking with Shiina and Lisa allowed her to gain some level of stability. She never forgot her arrangement with Brittany. As usual, the Cadet looked incredibly out of place with her massive coffin and her nun attire. She never came to this area of the Backlight often, and that was only due to the amount of errands the Church gave her to stock up supplies.

She waited as she sat on a bench with her cargo leaning near her. Hopefully Brittany would be around. Or not, who knows?

If Maria wasn't dressed in her usual habit attire, it would be rather hard to spot her in amidst the craze that is the Backlight District. Notably one of the most visited and crowded districts in Endymion, the place was nothing but a mess and a mix, of colors, of sounds, of voices and scents, suiting the uncountable disposition of stores. It got Brittany wondering why she wasn't used to check the place every now and then before. She probably should thank a certain casino employee she knows for introducing her to it. Regardless, a nun definitely stands out in the crowd, specially when bystanders point out her presence among many other common-dressed citizes. Spotting Maria, it was time for Brittany to play a little prank, just for starters. Walking carefully behind her (or not so much, the amount of chit-chatting from other people would somehow stiffle the echoing sound of her heels clacking against the ground), getting closer...and closer... Part one of her prank was one finger poking the right shoulder. The part two was pretty simple, once Maria looked in the direction she felt the touch, Brittany would quickly swap to the other side behind her friend, to remain unnoticed, then sitting exactly by Maria's side on the bench while the nun would be looking away in confusion. Clever, isn't it? Truly a masterpiece of a genious mind! Should it happen exactly as she planned, the moment Maria would glance to the other side, noticing finally the presence of the one she has been waiting for, there would be the giggling Brittany with her hands raised like a ghost waiting for a prey:

"Boo! Did I scare you?"

As mentioned, truly a prank worth of a mind above her time.

As she waited for her, Maria looked down at her feet as if pondering something as she grimaced. Hectic as these previous events were, there was something out of all of them that made her begin to think about more. It bothered her, significantly. She was satisfied with just following orders and her own training. While the Cadet had misgivings about her place within Julius' own personal army, there was even more reason to feel ill at ease.

"Is that how you see justice? Death to all without second chances?"

In the end, what really was her justice? Wanting to protect the innocent and helpless was good and all. But something as simple as that didn't seem like it would cut it for much longer. For all this time, Maria was taught to be efficient as possible. But for all the efficiency that was given to her, it didn't answer these moral dilemmas for her.

----------------

She blinked out of her reverie when someone touched her shoulder. Looking to her right, she saw nobody noticeable trying to attract her attention. But feeling the bench depress to her left, Maria turned to the other side to be greeted with a sight no other than Brittany.

Empty Wallets, Empty Purses (Brittany) VQZxlEs

"O-oh! Hey! Was that you?"

Maria stammered sheepishly while glowing a faint pink in her cheeks. It was the oldest trick in the book, and yet she fell for it. Being mentally preoccupied tended to happen, but it didn't make it any less embarrassing. Father Jorge used to do trivial pranks like this when she was younger. But now he was too busy working the administrative side of the organization.

She noticed how lovely Brittany appeared, as if she was basking in all her youthful glory. There was something enticing about her that Maria couldn't quite put her finger on. Perhaps it was part of her charm as a cheerleader and a model. That would probably do it.

Empty Wallets, Empty Purses (Brittany) 7wOKzLO

"Um, well. Yeah. Sorta. Haha.
So, what are we doing now?"

The look on Maria's face after a successful prank was just priceless, enough to warrant a heartfelt giggle from Brittany.

"Yep, that was me! I arrived just a while go, been looking around. Backlight is huge, right? I've never been a visitor until recently a friend got me into the gaming session. Have you tried it? Oh wait, can nuns even, you know, play games and all that like we normal people do?" One moment, and she realized the errors of her speech. Her eyes widened the same time the fingers run straight to her agape mouth to cover it in shame. "Oh I'm sooo sorry I said that! Not that I mean you're abnormal. You know, I mean we, the non-nuns. "Non-nuns"...that's actually funny to say out loud. Uuuuh anyway, you're a cool nun. Really! You even play guitar! ...now that I mentioned it, I kinda don't get why you'd bring it with you today. Like, everyone's staring..."

"I-it's fine! Um, sometimes we do, I think? Maybe in other Churches, not mine. I've never seen anyone play games or anything like that. We're usually just busy and all. Ha ha... Don't worry about it, it's alright," Maria hurriedly responded with a nervous laugh. Why would the Black Scriptures divulge themselves in such slothful activities? Maria never had that kind of privilege as a member of their Order. She was so removed from normal society for so long. And speaking of normal society, Maria forgot that she lied earlier about it being a guitar as she felt a nervous cold sweat tracing down her back.

Empty Wallets, Empty Purses (Brittany) 7wOKzLO

"Um... yeah! I was asked to hold onto it for a bit again.
School needed the guitar like last time.
So I'm returning it back again later... yeah! Ha ha..."

She tried to stay as composed as she could, trying to be nonchalant about the whole thing. But at the same time she was feeling rather sorry for Brittany for having to spend time with someone like her who stood out like a sore thumb. "Sorry, Brit. I had to. It's... It's not too much of a problem, right?"

"What-no! Of course not!" If at one instance Brittany's big mouth didn't have enough manners to point out how Maria's semblance attracted unwanted attention, the moment after she understood how embarrassed Maria was for being the center of unwanted attention for the wrong reasons. In a way, she could relate. Or rather, the Brittany from five years ago could. The last thing she wanted was making her friend uncomfortable for her own individuality, for being who she is. "I get to hang out with a nun who also rocks the guitar, there's nothing wrong with that! Take me for an example, people wouldn't believe when I say I'm into tabletop RPG just because they don't think I'd play it! Like, can't I be pretty and be a level 20 Mage in Dungeons & Dragons? If anything, it means we are the coolest friends from the block!", Brittany would answer with a large, assured grin. Nothing better to make someone feel less weird about themselves than showing you can also be a weird yourself.

She was feeling lightly heartened by the very fact her friend didn't mind her eccentric appearance. Even when nuns weren't exactly too common, they didn't tote around massive coffins holding an equally massive mix of a gun and a metallic stake. In this regard, Maria's guilt grew despite her strained smile spread on her lips. But she strictly wanted to keep her Cadet side and her visible side separate. Even so, it made her ask the question... did she deserve to have a life like this? "Heh. Thanks, Brit. Um, what's Dungeons and Dragons... Level 20 Mage? Is it one of those video games I keep hearing about?"

She remembered little kids playing their handheld devices during Church. Maria had to sneak near the pews to remind them to turn them off. Most parents usually addressed that issue themselves, but it was the Sunday School children that were accompanied by the understaffed teachers. But in another memory, she remembered someone claiming the tabletop game being less than benign.

Empty Wallets, Empty Purses (Brittany) VQZxlEs

"W-wait a minute! Dungeons and Dragons?
Isn't that the game that will pull your soul into Hell?
Brittany, you shouldn't be playing with such things!"

She was ultimately concerned for her friend. After having to deal with demons in the last few nights, it made her very cautious of anything regarding the supernatural. Especially when it came to the well-being of her friend.

"What? Com'on, you don't really believe that, do you?" Brittany wanted to laugh, she really wanted to, but as much as her mischievous side felt this uncontrollable urge to mock Maria's naivety, her friendly self decided it was probably for the best to not pick on her for her wrong beliefs. "Dungeons & Dragons is a roleplay game! It's not real! It's like, uh...How can I explain it?", Brittany would fidget for a minute, putting one finger over her lips in thought. "Think of it as a play! Or actually, remember when we were kids and we used to play with our friends pretending we are super heroes versus some evildoers in our imagination? Or if a friend wanted to act like an evildoer, they could too. Sometimes the villains are more powerful and better, you know. Anyway, that's what a roleplay game is! We actually write down the information about the characters we impersonate. Like, how strong they are, how smart, rich or whatever, if they have weak points or advantages, their stories and stuff. So, we gather a group of friends to create characters together and one of us will serve as the guide, you know. Kinda like a storyteller, they'll tell we name "Master", who will, uh...make the story. So it's kinda like writing a book together, there's nothing hellish about it!" Once it ended, Brittany felt she talked a lot, going on and on about something even she wasn't completely sure if it was right. In her mind, it sounded like the most reasonable way to explain an unique "hobby" to someone who's not entirely familiarized to it.

At first she blinked before allowing herself to attempt to digest the entirety of the information that Brittany loaded onto her brain. The more she listened and digested, the more her expression slowly grew to a confused visage. Roleplaying? Heroes? Evildoers? It certainly sounded the kind of stuff those stuffy fedora-wearing nerds, who only come on Sundays because of their parents, would do with their video games. But writing down? That was new.

Empty Wallets, Empty Purses (Brittany) C7i5r9V

"Um... I don't quite understand.
Why would anyone past the age of ten would want to keep playing make-believe?
I'm sorry, I don't quite... can't comprehend..."

For all of her life, Maria didn't exactly have the kind of free time most people did throughout these five years. Even now, there were days when she couldn't waste too much time dillydallying about. But having an awkward moment is something that Maria wasn't quite here for at all, no matter how stuck they were in this topic regarding this "Dungeon and Dragons." But it wasn't like she was completely convinced by what Brittany was saying either. Though there was some doubts she began to throw over what Father Jorge claimed.

"So! Uh... We're here to shop, right? So are there any places you have in mind, Brit?" she quickly changed the conversation as tactfully she could. For all of her efforts from last night, the Mother Superior found it suitable enough to gift her with more pocket change as far as salaries goes. Hopefully there won't be anything too pricey.

"Ah, it's because it's fun, like playing a videogame but you make your own characters or something. And because it provides escapism from mundane life when you assume a fantasy you can't accomplish in your daily misery because it allows us to sample our “ideal self-characteristics” especially when there’s a large gap between our ideal selves and who we actually think we are..." She shrugged, starring into space after her little monologue. To her, RP was fun like any other hobby, but she could understand it wasn't everyone's cup of tea. After hearing for a long while it was a nerdy pastime, sure it doesn't necessarily had any appeal to others. Though in Maria's case, it was more like inexperience blinded by religious beliefs than anything else. "Oh what am I saying, have I just, like, philosophized or something? Sometimes even I don't get myself. Let's get ready for shopping then! I'm sooo excited for this, it's like I have a doll to dress as I please! I never had a doll when I was a child, you know, I'm totally gonna pick the best clothes for you to get rid of this habit that makes you look like you're my grandma! No offense, but it does. With that body of yours, you know what you should be wearing instead? Sleeveless shirts and short skirts!" Brittany snapped her fingers like it was very obvious of a conclusion. Maria was at the best of her youth, so nothing better than praise and flaunt what she has before time and gravity start working on her teen beauty. "So, are you ready to let moi, your personal stylist Miss Brittany Wilson Chateaubriand du Couteau, guide you into the glorious, amazing path of fashion? Once you got a taste of it, there's no coming back!"

"I... I think I get why it's a past time," Maria slowly began with a pensive expression on her face. She was still ultimately unsure about the hobby, but the Cadet was beginning to understand it little by little, "I've never tried anything like this before. So I guess I can't really judge."

So it was a lot like playing a video game in a way, but more interactive with other people. She wasn't quite sure what to make of the idea of escaping from mundane life. Maybe since she was so busy working as a Cadet and as an Executor, Maria didn't exactly have that kind of freedom or thought to occupy any free time for such a thing. At least, until recently for cases when hanging out with people like Brittany. And speaking of which...

Empty Wallets, Empty Purses (Brittany) VqTMeuL

"Um, Brit? I know we're here for a makeover and I appreciate your enthusiasm. But let's not go too overboard... Okay?"

No matter how much of a step forward Maria was making from being a boring old nun, she was still stepping out of her comfort zone and it was making her innately anxious about walking around in a place like this. Sleeveless shirts and short skirts? It was stuff like this that gained a lot of priests' ire from time to time. Something among the lines of dressing formally and appropriately in the house of the Lord. Did Maria really want to make that first step?

"How about that one?" she pointed a finger at what looked like to be a very modest choice. Looking at the displayed mannequins, they seem to have a "safer" style of actual patterned sleeves and rugged jeans. It probably didn't really fit Brittany's definition of stylish, obviously with Maria being so isolated for some time, but the Cadet was hoping they could start out small before moving into more... risque places.

"Awww...okay then, you are the boss, I'm just gonna be your counselor! Or rather, your guide! And as your lovely guide through this journey in search of a wardrobe renewal, I'm gonna just let you pick whatever you feel comfortable. Buuuuut keep this in mind: we're young, we're pretty, we have to make use of it while we still can! We, which means, you too!" Probably when she spoke, it sounded much more motivation and frivolous than she intended to. Knowing how Maria kept a low opinion of herself, allied to how visibly anxious she was, Brittany naturally felt inclined to provide a bit of comfort. Like Maria was Cinderella and Brit was the impersonation of her fairy godmother, the kind of romanticized perspective that made the girl feel important and happy to be of assistance.

"Uhhhh, daring! You go, girl! You know, that's not really my style, I don't wear pants often. Like, it's hard to find suitable pants when you have legs this long. That and it makes me look like I have a flat butt because...well, who am I trying to fool, I really have a flat butt. Anyway, I kinda like it! Wanna go in there and try them?"

Young and pretty. Maria could agree with the former part, but the latter? Not so much in her opinion despite Brittany's assurances. Though that is why they were here, to find something new to freshen her look, right? She wasn't quite sure what to make out of Brittany's admission, except to smile awkwardly. This was a topic she definitely wasn't going to touch. Instead she nodded towards the shop as she began to open its door.

The low chime of their entrance heralded their arrival as the bell rang. It was a modest shop suitably air-conditioned and a number of customers were eying the wares hung on the racks. Maria began to survey around, attempting to find what caught her eye the most. Some of them were kind of tacky, even for her admittedly. But eventually her eye found something of interest. "Um, how about these?"

She picked out the according articles and held them near her person so that Brittany could have a better idea what she'd look like. It was a sleeveless shirt, like the model suggested earlier, and a red pair of slim pants. She wasn't quite sure about this whole set up, but that's what Brittany was here for, right?

While Maria busied herself with finding anything that could be at the same daring yet not enough and modest but not so much, Brittany would check around, distracted with some other wares and outfits disposed for customers. There she would stay, checking some pieces while humming a cheery tune absentmindedly until Maria called her attention once more. As she turned back, Brit's face changed to where she couldn't hide her happiness. Like her baby was giving the first steps on two feet into the normal life she has been deprived of!

"Oh. My. Gosh! These are soooo cute!", she said with her hands over her face as the purest display of surprise. "Better than the first option! I'm not really into pants but I'd give those a try. Now, go change it, I wanna see how it looks on your body. You know, it's different when you hold them close to your body and when you actually, like, dress them. So... go find a fitting room and change. Go!"

At first Maria was taken back at how vibrant and enthused her response was. But then again, she couldn't ever get used to her enthusiasm. Though there was something about it that seemed so precious about it. It made her feel a little more confident of herself and it was actually fun. Something that she rarely experienced ever since her induction into the Church.

"Well, alright. Give me a minute..." she began meekly before strolling off to the fitting room. At least before finding herself noticing that the coffin could hardly fit through the entrance. All of a sudden it felt claustrophobic, but at the same time, embarrassing to have this huge thing stuck with her. She was loathe to depart from it despite giving her so much daily problems, but left it leaning against a nearby wall before entering.

The space was far tighter than she expected. Yet there was more than enough room to move around between stalls. After occupying one, Maria hesitated as she undressed. Pondering if any of this was okay. Sure, it was just hanging out with Brittany and enjoying themselves trying out new clothes. As a Cadet, and most importantly as an Executor, was this okay? The teachings didn't really have such tight regulations on clothing or liberty these days. It just felt... awkward, as a new experience.

.

Empty Wallets, Empty Purses (Brittany) 2HZ4fKc

But she changed nevertheless.

The pants didn't feel as tight as she expected. The amount of freedom she felt from her arms felt a tiny bit chilly for once, but somehow liberating. Looking at the mirror, she couldn't help, but marvel at her new look. It was so different from what she was familiar with. The wonder lasted for a bit until noticing her posterior, causing her to blush and try to pull down the hem of her shirt to cover it up as much as she could. Maybe this was a bad idea and she should find a coat or something among those lines soon.

Yet this stall lacked any other articles like the rest nearby. Brittany was waiting and there was no way to come up with the excuse that they didn't fit her since it looked like a perfect fit. Maria bit her lip in anxiety and frustration, but she had something to show to Brittany. They came all this way, after all.

"H-how do I look...?" she murmured nervously as she finally presented herself in front of the model. She bit her lip shyly while still lightly trying to pull down the hem of the back of her shirt. Maria waited for her reply and was expectant of what she had to say. Was this a worthwhile choice?
