Appearance: Karin is 5’6” and weighs in at a lowly 115 lbs with a Nordic freckled complexion and bright green eyes. Blonde hair cut shortish doesn’t extend past the nape of her neck, she will normally wear a braid across her forehead left to right and pinned into place. She is skinny in the extreme with almost no bumps or curves down to her feet. Dressing brightly and colourfully however few people would mistake her for a boy however.

With clothing she tends not to dress up too much, a t-shirt and shorts does her well enough in most situations. However she does have a range of outfits from fancy to boring doldrums. The moment the temperature starts to change she puts on more layers.

Her voice is higher than normal and somewhat childish but carries with it the phrasing of heavy education and a wide vocabulary. Her movements match the way she sounds, energetic and playful, not afraid of physical contact, skipping and running are frequent Finally she tends to smell of lemon, or lemongrass given that her entire home smells like it.

Personality: Outwardly, Katherine seems like a very happy, smiley person who never seems to actually show getting upset. Annoyance and stress might creep in at times but she seems to brush that easily enough, in fact she seems to brush just about anything off pretty quickly. Putting up a facade was a trick she learned early, the amount of energy is because she was always pushed to never have free time when she was younger. Leaving her the lively, jokey, less than serious person she is or that at least she pretends to be today.

Behind that mask, Katherine feels extremely oppressed a lot of the time. Her parents are not very emotional, over all they seem entirely disenchanted with the idea of having children. She has three older brothers, each extremely successful and each of them cut a swath through their colony as captains and valedictorians. With both her parents equally successful there was no option for her but to emulate them. Whatever she did though, wasn’t good enough. It didn’t help that she just wasn’t as smart as her brothers, nor was she that naturally athletic. Her talents were well, she doesn’t feel she really has any. Or rather she qualifies a talent as something she can do that no one else can do better, has her parents brought her up. So despite being a good student, in sports clubs and well liked, other people do it better.

With all of that hidden away however Katherine is a popular, chatty and seems somewhat scattershot when left to her own devices. Working on any set project for a long long period of time is boring, she works best with interruptions to other useful activities before she gets stale with the task. Fun can also come from simple things and is quite impulsive when it comes to acting childish. She is only like it with her friends but she never really had a chance to be much of a child at home, it something that comforts her and makes her get along well with actual children.

Deep down, she wants to change the world to make more sense of it, to peel back the curtain. All her life she had felt that there was something more behind their reality, finding out what would certainly let her make her mark on the world.

The Background

History:

Katherine Tennfjord is the fourth child and first daughter born to Colby and Joanie, five years younger than her youngest brother. Kelly, her oldest brother is now a successful doctor, 31 years old and married with a daugher of his own. After him is Christen, a engineer for the Armor Testing Lab at 29 years old and at 23 her youngest brother Lorens is finishing a law degree and internship at one of the most select of firms. Her mother is the chair of the Eirini healthcare board and her father is a very senior Staff Command and Control Officer in the military. All her life everyone in her family has shown the same huge success in their lives, that she was swept up in and forced to emulate. Only unlike her brothers she never seemed to come first and best at anything.

With both her parents working full time Katherine spent a lot of time at daycare when she was little along with various child minders. When she was old enough though, about four years old she was left with her brothers more often than not. They were her best friends and the people she wanted to be like, and they were always studying. Never the most social of people she felt it was entirely normal to try and be just like them. Of course being older than her she never measured up to them, a goal that she always chased. Be it test scores, clubs, athletics, however much time her parents forced her to study, compared her to her more successful brothers, Katherine got the silver medal.

It would be easy for Katherine to hate her brothers, sometimes she does but they were family and the good came with the bad.. Her brothers were treated the same way, they seemed to weather it and for them it worked, while not as strong the shared the same attitude of their parents. Her older brother at least could see she would try at least as hard as she did, but by the time she was six he was already off to university. Everyone else was too busy studying to give her that much attention.

The way she dealt with all of this was to run away but not in a physical sense. Seeing herself as being a failure academically despite only just trailing the best and brightest.Physically not that impressive, she tried to search for a purpose and making people happy, enjoying herself and smiling a lot, even when she didn’t want to seemed like one that would work. It gave her a place to be, an identity and she didn’t want to make other people sad because she was a failure. So with a warped view of the world and success in place she fought her way to cheerful mediocrity.

This all happened before her age reached double digits then the weirder part happened. Back when her father was not quite so important he used to disappear for weeks or even months on work for the military. There was little of remark but his absence however one time. On his return, out of the blue Katherine was given a sister, though she was still the youngest. Karin found herself in a difficult place, her brothers had been nice to her for the most part but she wasn’t really used to dealing with people her own age like that. She tried and it paid off, it turned out she was placed with someone who could be her best friend, almost inserable. Though it still seemed to her that Dani was better than her at just about everything she did. To have someone her own age, around her almost every day was a great diversion from her feelings of failure and helped her presented personality really come out into its own.

While Dani seemed interested in military matters like her adoptive father, Karin personally felt it was pointless. That while it might be fine for an adoptive daughter, she still had to strive to the top, even as she failed upwards. Karin focused on administration, true power. As her mentor would say, “True power, comes from wielding other people’s.” She was apprenticed to him thanks to her family name every day she worked as his assistant, making sure the colony itself actually ran for those that were perceived as the rulers. It was to her, a way of making sure her parents couldn’t be disappointed in her, that she’d be respected and that she’d be truly happy.

She still spent time with Dani of course, even going as far as to be an archer on occasion, not a terrible one either. Though she could never even hope of measuring up to her best friend. It would be easy for her to hate her, but Dani was just so nice to her all the time. It made even their arguments, tame.
